TheSkalawag,
Yes, the company did pull the add after the shooting. In fact, their entire website was down for awhile. Not sure if it's back up yet. -

ReplyFolks, some clarification on deleted posts, since most of the recent comments on this thread seem to have been related to them. So here's a quick reminder, and then let's get back on topic with posts relevant to the discussion.
Sometimes a post is deleted not because it's flagged by another user, but just because an editor like me or Sharon happens to see it and decides it crosses the line. It's a necessarily subjective line, and some editors might delete a post others might let alone, but the long and short is that if an editor spots a post that he or she considers to be in violation of the terms of service, out it goes.
Now, because we deleted one post, it doesn't mean we've caught every post that should be deleted, especially on long threads. We're not just moderators; we're each responsible for updating the content for an entire Patch site. We simply can't spend all our time policing these threads. But if we do happen to see a comment that violates the terms of service, we'll delete it. If the poster was insulted somewhere up the thread and we didn't catch it, that's unfortunate, but it doesn't have anything to do with the decision to delete THIS particular post. Posts are deleted based on their content, not the overall history of the thread.
So there it is. If you write a post that violates the terms of service and we see it, we'll delete it. The best way to avoid that is to not violate the rules. Simple as that. Now let's get back to the topic at hand.

Karsten,
You make some good points here. Just to raise the question for discussion, what do folks on here think about marketing guns to children? I don't know if you've seen the ads for the Cricket rifle, but they're pretty clearly aimed at kids. It seems to me that if you're going to allow a child to shoot, you should at least make it very clear that a gun is a very adult piece of equipment and that even holding one invests the shooter with a pretty heavy responsibility. Yes, the parents should be doing that themselves, but is a company that actively markets guns to kids helping matters? Just food for conversation. -
On the article How Do You Feel About the Emergency Contraceptive Pill Being Available for 15-year-olds?

Sharon,
Yes, communication with kids is good, but that doesn't mean you legislate away a legitimate method of contraception. And quite frankly, a parent's need for communication with a teenager should not come at the expense of that teen's health or an unwanted pregnancy. Some families don't communicate and never will. Those teens don't deserve to be punished for their parents' failings. And ultimately, the teenager is her own person, and the decisions she makes about contraception should not be subject to her parents' say-so. The fact is that the majority of teenagers will have sex before they leave high school, regardless of what their parents say or do. Communicating with them is good, but one shouldn't take away smart safe-sex options. -

On the article Does Anybody Still Watch 'Television'?

Agreed. I'm hoping that cable will eventually realize it needs to go to a more "a la carte" model where you can pick and choose which channels you get, rather than paying inflated rates for hundreds of channels you don't watch. For instance, I would love to have the National Geographic Channel, and I'd rather gouge out my eyes than watch the Golf Channel. Guess which one comes with the standard package?

ReplyI have Netflix and Hulu apps on my Xbox, so that's what I watch about 90 percent of the time. The only reason I keep cable is for the news, Mythbusters and Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert. And I TiVo Mythbusters and Stewart/Colbert about half the time.

ReplyJust deleted another few comments for making personal attacks, and a couple that were in direct response to those and wouldn't make sense out of context. I will ask again, please keep your comments on topic.

ReplyFolks, Sharon's asked to stop personal attacks and stay on topic so we don't have to comb through the thread deleting people's posts. I'll reiterate that, and add that our terms of service also prohibit posts that "promotes racism, bigotry, hatred or physical harm of any kind against any group or individual."
