Discover Mills store a sportsmen's candy store and educational, too
There’s only one way to describe a visit to Bass Pro Shops, it’s an unforgetable fun experience! Want to try your hand at climbing the rock face of a mountain? Test your shooting skills with a rifle? Eat some delicious fudge? Watch hungry fish being fed? Buy some new stylish clothing? Invest in a new Bass Tracker boat package ready for your next fishing adventure? Need equipment for deer hunting, an ATV or or a black powder rifle? It’s in there! Outfit yourself for archery, or purchase a gift for someone special. Redecorate your den with rustic furniture? The list goes on because Johnny Morris couldn’t find what he needed to go fishing. He rented a U-Haul trailer back in 1971 and left his father’s liquor store in Springfield, MO, in search…

Romantic evening with 'Love Notes' theme raises funds for Duluth HS Band
About 277 music lovers and supporters of the Duluth High School Band spent a romantic evening at "Savory Sounds of Duluth" last Sunday (Feb. 13). Patrons and parents sampled food and beverages from local restaurants and bid on items in silent and spirited live auctions to raise funds for the band program. The fundraising gala was hosted by the Duluth High School Band Booster Association on the high school campus. The program began with a silent auction of gifts, art, dining cards, and fun family activities while Tri-M Music Honor Society members performed vocal and instrumental renditions of favorite songs. The Valentine's Day Eve celebration had a "Love Notes" theme this year. The Duluth High School Jazz Band ushered in the live auction …

Duluth coffee/chocolate shop and gathering spot celebrates second anniversary
Chocolate Perks celebrated the second anniversary of a long-standing dream of owner Marsha Anderson Bomar Feb. 9, and I had the priviledge of meeting and interviewing her on this milestone date. Marsha said her love for chocolate was born with her first taste of a Nestle’s Crunch bar when she was a junior in high school in Brooklyn, NY. She then got hooked on Hostess Twinkies back when they were made of “real” sponge cake injected with sweet whipped cream. Her dream was propelled forward with the taste of handmade chocolates she discovered in a specialty shop in New Jersey. She eventually saw that dream come true when she founded Chocolate Perks, a downtown bistro in historic downtown Duluth. Marsha’s friendly smile and warm personality …

Picturesque park features heritage farm setting and pleasant walking trails
You might drive right by McDaniel Farm Park because it's tucked away into a residential area on McDaniel Road in Duluth. If you're looking for curving trails and beautiful vistas that inspire you to retrofit into a restored 1930s farm scene, this is the park for you. Self-guided tours and classes are available for a sharecropper's pittance of only $5, but that's not all. There are special events such as Civil War re-enactments, day camps and a large pavilion that can be rented to accommodate your family and friends. The farmhouse, barn and outbuildings look like they did when actual farm families lived and worked here. You'll even find some vintage tools resting at their posts awaiting the return of calloused hands to put them to work …

Our photographer finds folks basking in mid-winter sunshine at Shorty Howell Park
Shorty Howell Park saw families, children and dogs come out to enjoy outdoor activites on a beautiful warm, sun-filled day in Duluth last Sunday (Jan. 30). I have a theory (stolen from my daughter) that this is the very reason people are friendlier in the South. Plain and simple: The sun shines, we come outside, and we interact with each other. Those unfortunate folk in the frozen tundra of the northern states measure their sunshine in hours per month and inches of snow to melt before they can come out of their state of climate-induced semi-hibernation. Personally, I can feel for them because I'm a transplanted Yankee! Thanks to southern hospitality, I'm fixin' to learn how to speak, y'all.
