Some residents of Georgia and more than a dozen other states have filed petitions to secede from the United States, according to media reports. Residents of Alabama, New York, Michigan, Texas and other states have filed the petitions under the "We The People" program, featured on the White House website, according to the Huffington Post. The Georgia petition, which already has more than 4,000 signatures, reads in part: "...Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute new Government..." Thousands of lawyers already deployed to battleground states.
The New York Times is reporting that thousands of lawyers from all around the country have already been deployed to battleground states. The reason -- to be in place should there be a need Tuesday to contest each vote. According to the polls, the vote is so close at this point in the race that nobody is sure of the outcome. The NY Times reports that Democrats have 2,500 lawyers in Ohio alone, 600 of them just in Cuyahoga County. Each party is expressing fear of sabotage and is taking advanced steps to make sure nothing illegal prevents their guy from winning. Thanks to the Electoral College, every presidential election comes down to the candidates' performance in a handful of states. Should that system be abolished in favor of direct election by popular vote?
As Election Day draws nearer, many polls show President Barack Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney running neck-and-neck nationally -- but a decided, if slight, advantage for Obama in the electoral vote. Each state gets a certain number of electoral votes, based upon its population. In order to win the presidency, either Obama or Romney must win at least 270 of the 538 total electoral votes. The system has the effect of making your vote count a lot more in "swing states" -- states where the majority could conceiveably vote for either candidate -- than in other, more politically predictable states. Here are the latest Gallop poll results on the race between Obama and Romney.
If history is to repeat itself, then the voters that put President Barack Obama in the White House are likely to be the ones who will keep him there for another four years. According to the latest Gallop poll, the "2012 electorate looks like 2008 ... the key elements of President Obama's electoral coalition, such as racial minorities, women, young adults, and postgraduates will likely turn out at rates similar to those in 2008." The number of non-white voters has risen due to the growth of that segment of the population over the past decade. Gallop reports that "the percentage of non-white voters, now 20 percent, has risen significantly since 2004 (15 percent). Just three weeks ago, Gov. Mitt Romney was trailing in the polls and President Barack Obama looked all but set for a second term – or so many of the political pundits thought. On Sept. 20, The New York Times reported that Romney “faced a daunting task,” if he hoped to win the presidency. But then came the first debate and things look a little different now. After new polls released on Oct. 9, Romney had pulled ahead in the RealClearPolitics average at 47.6 to 46.1 and Politico was the only one of the traditional polls that gave Obama a lead at 48 to 49. Checking on the 2012 presidential race. The latest available information shows that President Obama is either faring well for re-election...or still has a fight ahead of him. The latest tracking (as of Sept. 27) by the Huffington Post shows the president can claim more than 300 electoral votes, well above the 271 total needed to win the election. This includes electoral votes from swing states that supposedly are "leaning" to Obama, such as Colorado and Virginia. However, interactive maps by The Washington Post and USA TODAY differ (see links below). Only 11 percent of voters are reportedly undecided. Are you still one of them?
Beaumontenterprises.com reports that a recent CNN poll has only 11 percent of voters undecided on which way they are going to vote in November. For all intents and purposes, the rest are pretty evenly split between reelecting the Obama/Biden ticket or giving the Romney/Ryan ticket a chance. The Republican National Committee in Tampa, FL, wrapped up yesterday with everyone getting a closer look at presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan. They were also given the opportunity to listen to several other speakers who support the Republican ticket.
