Large crowd in Suwanee attends emotional ceremony for Griffin and Jake Prince, who were killed in the June boating collision on Lake Lanier.
There were tears, laughter and memories -- usually within seconds of each other -- Tuesday in Suwanee as family members, friends and others attended the emotional funeral ceremony for Griffin and Jake Prince. And there was a lot of talk about family and spirituality as the Prince and Hansen families were among those attending services for the brothers, killed in a June 18 boating collision on Lake Lanier. "Family is the perfect eternal organization," said Gary Hansen, one of the boys' grandfathers, at the ceremony at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Suwanee Dam Road. Family members attend and speak at the Latter-day Saints church in funeral for Griffin and Jake Prince, victims of the recent boating fatality on Lake Lanier.
Updated 1:53 p.m. Hundreds of people, including members of the Prince and Hansen families, Tuesday attended an emotional funeral ceremony for Griffin and Jake Prince. The ceremony was held in Suwanee at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Suwanee Dam Road. The ceremony began at noon and concluded about 1:45 p.m. "Families are forever," Bishop Mark Bradford said in concluding remarks. Among the speakers were Gary Hansen, the boys' grandfather, and Jeff Humphrey, a longtime family friend. Suwanee Police officer Wes Edwards, an uncle to the Prince youths, gave the invocation at the ceremony, and was a pallbearer. The boat that was involved in this week's fatal collision on Lake Lanier was purchased from the business owned by the victims' family, according to a media report. Michael Prince Sr., principal owner of The Grass Shack near Lake Lanier, told 11alive.com that he sold Paul J. Bennett the boat involved in Monday night's crash that took the life of Jake Prince, 9. Updated 5:49 p.m. Authorities have released the names of the victims from Monday's fatal boating accident on Lake Lanier, according to media reports. Nine-year-old Jake Prince was killed when a fishing boat crashed into a pontoon boat, and Prince's brother, Griffin Prince, 13, remains missing, WSB-TV website reported. The WSB report also said the children’s father, Michael Prince Jr., was driving the pontoon boat. The Prince family is from Gwinnett County. Paul J. Bennett of Cumming has been arrested and released on bond in connection with the crash. He faces boating under the influence charges, and other charges are possible. Updated June 20 An arrest has been made in the case involving a fatality from the boating collision Monday at Lake Lanier, according to 11alive.com. At a news conference Tuesday morning, DNR officials announced the arrest of Paul J. Bennett in connection with the crash. The 44-year-old faces a charge of boating under the influence; the DNR said more charges are possible, including homicide by vessel and failing to give aid, the 11alive.com report said. The AJC reported that Bennett is from Cumming. DNR spokesman Stephen Adams said Bennett refused medical treatment when he was arrested about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
