Gwinnett firefighters were kept busy overnight (May 19) responding to numerous storm-related emergencies, including a person trapped in a vehicle in Duluth in rising water. The following is a brief synopsis of the most significant incidents compiled by the Gwinnett Fire Department’s public information officer. Due to the potential for wintry weather and hazardous road conditions, the Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services Department will place an extra engine and medic unit in-service overnight Thursday to assist with any weather-related incidents. Weather forecasters are predicting a chance for winter weather that may bring snow and black ice to the metro Atlanta area including Gwinnett County. The popular Peachtree Corners eatery was heavily damaged by fire around 5:30 p.m. A quick-thinking restaurant manager evacuated customers and employees when he saw smoke in the back of the building.
Dreamland BBQ, the popular restaurant located on the corner of Peachtree Parkway and Peachtree Corners Circle, caught fire Wednesday (Jan. 16) afternoon. The fire appears to have caused extensive damage. Gwinnett firefighters were called around 5:20 p.m. and had the fire under control shortly after 6 p.m., said Lt. Colin Rhoden, public information officer for the fire department. "There were several patrons in the restaurant at the time, and the manager was able to get them and the employees out of the restaurant," said Rhoden. A fire that apparently started in the fireplace caused significant damage to a house in the 4700 block of Fairway View Court NW in Duluth early Thursday (Dec. 27) evening. Gwinnett firefighters responded to a report from an occupant about a fire in the home. A neighbor also called reporting flames visible from the back of the house, according to a report released to media by Capt. Tommy Rutledge. Firefighters were dispatched at 5:53 p.m. and arrived at the scene at 5:58 p.m. The fire was brought under control at 6:26 p.m., Rutledge reported. A female occupant was reportedly cooking in the kitchen when she smelled smoke. Quick action by hospital staff and sprinklers kept a fire that apparently started in a commercial dryer in the laundry room early Saturday (July 28) morning at Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth kept the fire from spreading. When Gwinnett firefighters arrived, they found a small fire in the laundry room and moderate smoke on the hospital’s main level, Capt. Tommy Rutledge reported in a media release. Fire crews were dispatched at 6:16 a.m., arrived at the scene at 6:22 a.m. and brought the fire under control at 6:43 a.m. The fire was being controlled by the building’s sprinkler suppression system when the fire department arrived, according to Rutledge. Gwinnett firefighters quickly brought a house fire in the 4600 block of Fairway View Court in Duluth under control after lightning apparently struck the home, according to Lt. Colin S. Rhoden. Firefighters were dispatched at 4:48 p.m. with the fire reported under control at 5:16 p.m. Wednesday (July 18). Three occupants were home at the time of the fire, and all escaped unharmed. WSB-TV news reported that the 2-year-old toddler called his father’s attention to the fire. An emergency crew from Atlanta Gas Light stopped a natural gas leak in the 4800 block of High Forest Drive in Duluth about 10:58 p.m. Tuesday (May 15). Gwinnett firefighters responded at 8:05 p.m. to a report of a gas leak in the neighborhood and detected a strong odor of natural gas and a leak from a two-inch service line. Eight residents of four homes were evacuated and then allowed to return after the line was repaired and the situation was safely under control. No injuries were reported. The leak was caused by a contracting crew working on the sewer system, according to Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge. The quick actions of Gwinnett County firefighters saved a family pet after a fire broke out Tuesday afternoon. The fire broke out just after 4:30 p.m. in a home on the 6000 block of Ambercrest Court in Buford. In a press release, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Eric Eberly said the fire displaced the family of four, but the actions of firefighters saved a small dog that was still inside the home when crews arrived. “Units arrived on scene to find a working fire on a two-story residential structure,” Eberly said in the release. “Crews encountered a large volume of fire coming from the front garage and roof area.” Eberly said crews first entered the residence to search for children after a report from neighbors that …

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, so get an extra hour of shuteye by setting your clocks back by one hour before going to bed tonight. Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services suggests that you change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, too.
