Is Rejecting Healthcare Exchanges the Right Move?

Georgia became one of five states under Republican governors Friday that rejected the provision in the President's healthcare reform calling on states to set up online health insurance exchanges.

Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia on Friday became the fifth governor of a state to reject a provision in the President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law. According to Reuters, the other four states that had already rejected the provision that would require the states to set up healthcare exchanges are Ohio, Michigan, Florida and Wisconsin. Ohio, Michigan and Florida, however, have indicated a willingness to share in some of the responsibility with Washington. Deal was one of the many governors who held off on making a decision until after the election. Republican candidate Mitt Romney had pledged to repeal the president's healthcare plan if elected. Since that didn't happen, states are left dealing with the plan that is scheduled to be …

Governor: Reprioritize Projects

“We’ll have a ‘need to do’ Transportation Improvement Program list, but not a ‘want to do’ list."

In a statement issued Wednesday (Aug 1), Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said the state and local leaders will have to repriortize transportation projects after a one-cent sales tax increase to fund improvements mostly failed to pass. “We’ll have a ‘need to do’ Transportation Improvement Program list, but not a ‘want to do’ list. In addition to tight state budgets, we’re also facing a significant reduction in federal funds so tough choices await,” Deal said. The governor reiterated his commitment to working on improving transportation in Georgia using existing resources. “The voters of Georgia have spoken, and I will continue to do what I have done since I became governor: Work in consultation with state transportation leaders, legislators and …

NOW Deal says he wants to reform MARTA management (which for the past several years has lost HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars and can't cover BILLIONS of dollars in deferred maintenance) after he lost the T-SPLOST subsidy. Simply changing project lists - without ANY consideration of cost-benefit - is another tax and spend stimulus package like T-SPLOST. Taxes are NOT an investment - and government…   more ›

Ga. Hwy. 400 Toll May Go Away at End of 2013

Gov. Nathan Deal announces intention to pay off Ga. 400 debt and remove toll at the end of 2013. The State Road and Tollway Authority will have to approve it first though.

Gov. Nathan Deal announced that he would have the state pay off its bond debt on Ga. Hwy. 400 by Dec. 1, 2013. In a press release issued Thursday (July 19), the governor said the state would then move quickly to remove the Ga. 400 toll before the beginning of 2014. This would stop Ga. Hwy. 400 toll collections four years earlier than previously planned. However, the State Road and Tollway Authority will have to approve it first. Deal said this move was in response to his promise to commuters. “Ga. 400 commuters have paid more than their fair share already, and this is the earliest we can bring it down without paying a penalty for early repayment of the bonds,” Deal said in the press release. “When the Ga. 400 toll went up, the state of …

Gwinnett Place CID Awarded Grant for DDI

$1 million grant for infrastructure improvements will help fund construction of Diverging Diamond Interchange at Interstate 85 and Pleasant Hill Road.

The Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (GPCID) is getting a $1-million grant to be used toward construction of the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at Interstate 85 and Pleasant Hill Road. Gov. Nathan Deal announced approval of the grant request Thursday (June 21) at the State Capitol, according to a press release issued by the GPCID. The funds are being made available through the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank (GTIB). The GTIB program is a revolving infrastructure investment fund established in 2008 by Georgia legislators and administered by the State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA). “The GTIB program is a way for communities who are serious about investing in their infrastructure to apply for the help they …

I would have thought a large 1-way loop between Satellite Blvd and Shackleford Road using Steve Reynolds and Pleasant Hill Road would have been a more efficient design. You would have 6 lanes of traffic in the same direction on both Steve Reynolds and Pleasant Hill. There would be no red lights slowing traffic down, and traffic entering and exiting the loop would be able to flow freely. It would …   more ›

Gov. Deal Strongly Endorses TSPLOST

"As an individual, I do advocate for it. Secondly, as a governor, I am advocating for it because this is not a legislatively imposed tax. It is a tax increase that the people themselves will decide about." - Nathan Deal

With traffic creeping along the I-75/I-85 Connector below, Gov. Nathan Deal and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle stood high atop an 18-story Midtown office tower early Wednesday (June 13) evening and urged Metro Atlantans to vote in favor of next month’s regional transportation penny sales tax referendum. The pair addressed a small group of reporters atop the Atlantic Station building prior to a private fundraiser for local business leaders who are in favor of the tax’s passage. A new Insider Advantage poll of 539 people shows that 47 percent of those asked would vote against the 10-year, one cent sales tax, with 32 percent for it and 21 percent undecided. But those numbers didn’t phase Deal, who brushed aside the notion that he was backtracking on …

The 1% T-SPLOST would cost every family of four about $8,000 over its first 10 years. Food will be taxed. This consumption tax will hit low/fixed income families hardest. It would provide $135 Million for 2 mass transit projects in Gwinnett - one is a $95 Million study of rail along I-85 for which construction will NOT start before 2040. The other "project" is a check for $40 Million to the bus …   more ›

Governor Supports Charter School Amendment

Deal urges voters to pass the amendment when it appears on the ballot in November.

After its final legislative passage Monday, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal urged voters to support the constitutional amendment allowing the state to create charter schools. The amendment will appear on the General Election ballot in November. “The General Assembly has acted wisely and courageously to give Georgians the choice to implement true local control: parental choice,” Deal stated in an announcement issued by his office. “We must encourage innovation and the pursuit of excellence in our schools. “Starting a state-chartered school is not done easily or without lots of hard work, but we need a system that allows for this option. State-chartered schools help students trapped in underperforming schools and aid communities that want to …

Nathan Deal and Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal. The flag expresses Nevils’ appreciation to his home state for supporting his fellow fallen and wounded Special Operations troops. Gov. Nathan Deal visited one of Alpharetta's high-tech companies along with members of the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) to publicize the strength of the state's technology industries. More than 13,000 technology companies employ more than 250,000 Georgians, Deal said.
