Gwinnett County Commission approves lease for new Georgia State Patrol post in the former Edwin Watts Golf Shop in unincorporated Duluth.

A new Georgia State Patrol post will be established on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth providing additional law enforcement presence in the area. The GSP post will be located in a portion of the former Edwin Watt Golf Shop at 1645 Pleasant Hill Road in unincorporated Duluth. The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved a $31,000 lease agreement March 5 with R.W. Management for one year with two one-year renewal options, according to a news release issued by Gwinnett County. A permanent facility will be considered in the future. The Gwinnett County Police Department’s special justice fund, which receives revenue from confiscated assets and the sale of property associated with illegal drug and narcotics activity, will fund the new post …

A total of 17 traffic deaths were reported in Georgia for the 102-hour holiday travel period which began Friday, Dec. 21 at at 6 p.m. and ended Tuesday, Dec. 25 at midnight, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). GSP troopers investigated 685 crashes resulting in 300 injuries and 11 fatalities. Six traffic fatalities were investigated by other law enforcement agencies. The number of traffic-related deaths is much higher than in 2011 when three people were killed in accidents during the Christmas holiday travel period.

Nineteen people were killed and 263 people injured as a result of car accidents over the 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period. The holiday travel period began at 6 p.m. on Nov. 21 and ended at midnight on Nov. 25. The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) investigated 11 of the 19 fatal crashes and handled 622 traffic accidents in all. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in four of the 11 traffic deaths investigated by troopers. Seven of the victims were not wearing seat belts. GSP also investigated one fatality involving a pedestrian. The Georgia State Patrol will be watching for impaired drivers, speeders and unrestrained drivers and passengers during Christmas and New Year’s holiday travel periods, according to a GSP announcement. Troopers are cautioning drivers to designate a sober driver if alcohol consumption will be part of holoday celebrations. The Christmas holiday travel period begins Friday, Dec. 23, at 6 p.m. and ends Monday night, Dec. 26. The Georgia State Patrol is reminding drivers to make safety a priority while traveling to visit family and friends for Thanksgiving Day. The Thanksgiving holiday period is one of the heaviest-traveled in Georgia each year, according to a GSP holiday travel advisory. This year, the holiday travel period will cover 102 hours beginning Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 6 p.m. and ending at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27. During last year’s Thanksgiving period, the Georgia State Patrol investigated 437 traffic crashes that resulted in 397 injuries and eight fatalities. Update: A child, reported as one of the fatalities, is in fact still alive. That would make only six traffic fatalities reported on Georgia roads compared to 14 for the same period last year.
Update: GSP Patrol spokesman confirms Alex Fowlin, who is 10 and not 11, did not die in the wreck as reported and is in fact alive and at Egleston. Despite wet roads on the last day of the Labor Day Weekend, the Georgia Department of Public Safety reported a significant drop in traffic fatalities on Georgia Roads over the 78-hour travel weekend. For reporting purposes, the Labor Day travel weekend is from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. The July 4th holiday travel period appeared to be more fatal this year than last, with 19 fatalities reported from law enforcement agencies throughout the state versus 11 in 2010. The Georgia State Patrol reported 313 crashes over the travel period, which ran from 6 p.m. on Friday to midnight on July 4. During that 78-hour period, the agency also reported 230 injuries. The Gainesville and Cumming area were especially fatal, with seven total traffic-related deaths reported. The Georgia State Patrol has one primary goal this 4th of July weekend -- to keep the accident count as low as possible. Last year, more than 1,800 accidents occurred over the Independence Day holiday weekend. Those accidents resulted in 834 injuries and 11 fatalities. Col. Bill Hitchens, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, said troopers will be watching for drivers under the influence, speeders and motorists not using seat belts. “Our Troopers and MCCD Officers will be concentrating on the most common violations identified as contributing factors in fatal traffic crashes," Hitchens said in a released statement.
