Charter school amendment appears headed for win.
UPATE 5:50 pm If you are in line to vote at 7 pm, you will get to vote even though the polls close then. Tens of thousands of Fulton County voters have already cast ballots today. Turnout is especially high for today’s General Election, as it is in most Presidential election years. It's too early to know how this year compares to 2008. In the evening after traditional work hours, peak turnout is anticipated, and tens of thousands of additional voters could exercise their right to vote. Fulton County elections officials released a statement advising that voters who are in line at 7 pm will be allowed to vote under Georgia law. Results Updated 2 a.m., Wednesday Gwinnett County voters provided few surprises on Election Day. They came out in large numbers, voted mostly Republican and provided several lopsided outcomes. Nearly 75 percent of the county's registered voters casted their ballots, more than five percentage points better than the 2008 turnout. Gwinnettians voted for Gov. Mitt Romney for president, for incumbents in 11 races, including three Board of Education candidates, and in favor of the controversial Public Charter School Amendment (by a 63% to 37% margin), which drew similar margins elsewhere in the state. Gwinnett Schools Supt. Alvin Wilbanks and school board members will be holding an "election watch" Tuesday (Nov. 6), according to a GCPS announcement. The gathering will be at the cafeteria in the Instructional Support Center in Suwanee, the announcement said. Among the returns they could be following will be re-election races involving Gwinnett Board of Education members Dr. Mary Kay Murphy (District III), Louise Radloff (District V) and Carole Boyce (District I). Duluth residents wishing to vote in advance in the July 31 Primary will have to do so Friday, July 27. Duluth City Hall is not a location for early voting. Residents may vote early at the Gwinnett County Voter Registrations and Elections Office at 455 Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville. For more information and locations for early voting click here. There will be no voting anywhere in Gwinnett on Monday. Voting on Tuesday, July 31, will be at at Gwinnett County precincts. Jace Brooks, candidate for the Gwinnett County Commission District 1 race, announced Friday (July 20) that top elected officials in Suwanee, Duluth and Sugar Hill have endorsed his candidacy. Updated 2:48 p.m. Duluth city officials have notified the public that the mayor and council members may attend an upcoming campaign event for Gwinnett County Commission District 1 candidate Jace Brooks of Suwanee. Duluth this week sent out a public notice that "there may be a quorum of the Duluth Mayor and Council" at an ice cream social for Brooks, who is opposing Laurie McClain for the post. The event is scheduled at Chocolate Perks, 3160 Main St., in Duluth on Tuesday, July 24, 5:30-7 p.m. The notice said that no official council action will be taken.
