Shock Wave Rolls Through Duluth

Officials, citizens shocked by news about former Duluth mayor Shirley Lasseter.

It was as if a shock wave rolled through Duluth and the rest of Gwinnett County Thursday (May 31) as news spread that Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Fanning Lasseter had pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Atlanta to accepting $36,500 in bribes for her potential favorable vote on a proposed real estate development. Everyone that Duluth Patch called so far for a comment replied that they were “shocked.” And saddened by the news, too. The vivacious redhead served as mayor of Duluth for 14 years before running for the Gwinnett County Commission and getting elected. Lasseter resigned from the commission the same day as she entered her guilty plea in court.  Since she did not run for re-election, her first term would have expired at …
