Due to the potential for wintry weather and hazardous road conditions, the Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services Department will place an extra engine and medic unit in-service overnight Thursday to assist with any weather-related incidents. Weather forecasters are predicting a chance for winter weather that may bring snow and black ice to the metro Atlanta area including Gwinnett County. Fire officials are working closely with emergency management and police to monitor weather and road conditions, as well as incident responses, according to a media release issued by the department. Residents in Georgia will now be able to get updates of inclement weather and road conditions from the Georgia Department of Transportation via Facebook, Twitter and a newly designed website. A preview of the new inclement weather section of the department’s website was a highlight at the November meeting of the Georgia Transportation Board. The page went live Nov. 17 and can be viewed at www.dot.ga.gov/winterweather. In addition to the new webpage, social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter will be used to distribute information in the event of severe weather.
