The U.S. Postal Service reportedly will end Saturday mail delivery in August 2013, but would continue to deliver packages on Saturdays. According to an ABC News report, the agency is making the move to curb financial losses. The plan would save the agency about $2 billion annually, the report says. Also, delivery to post office boxes would continue on Saturdays, the report says. And post offices now open on Saturdays would remain open on Saturdays. The U.S. Postal Service is planning to move some mail processing operations from the Atlanta Processing and Distribution Center at 3900 Crown Road in Atlanta to the North Metro Processing and Distribution Center at 1605 Boggs Road in Duluth. The transition, which is expected to start about Feb. 27, is the result of a study begun in 2009 and a decline in mail volume, according to a press release issued Thursday (Nov. 15) by the USPS. “Given the drastic 20 percent decline in mail volume the Postal Service has experienced since 2007, we must take action to reduce the size of our mail processing network,” Atlanta District Manager Salvatore Vacca said in the press release. “Consolidating operations and placing our people where we need them is …

The United States Postal Service is seeking community input regarding a proposal to move some mail processing operations from the Atlanta Processing and Distribution Center into the North Metro Processing and Distribution Center in Duluth. USPS Atlanta District Manager Salvatore Vacca and USPS Senior Plant Manager Scott Raymond will give an overview on the proposal at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Hapeville Elementary School, 3440 North Fulton Ave., in Hapeville. The proposal would take advantage of available processing capacity at the Duluth center to increase efficiency and improve productivity. EDDM allows local businesses to market to every address in their neighborhoods without the need to rent or purchase mailing lists, according to a USPS announcement.
