Retailers in unincorporated areas of Gwinnett will be able to sell packaged alcohol on Sunday, May 6, and Sundays thereafter. The Gwinnett commissioners in April amended the county's alcohol sales ordinance to move up the effective date. Gwinnett residents approved Sunday sales in a referendum in March. Originally, June 1 was the effective start date. Sales are allowed from 12:30-11:30 p.m. on Sunday, although stores can set their own hours within that window. Duluth and several other cities in Gwinnett have been allowing Sunday sales since last year. Commissioners also established fees for retailers -- a $500 annual fee for a retailer selling both beer and wine on Sundays and $250 for a retailer selling one of those items.

During the Tuesday (April 17) Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners meeting, members established the fees for businesses selling wine and beer on Sundays. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the fees were set at $500 a year for businesses selling both wine and beer and $250 for those who only sell one kind of alcoholic beverage. Since the BOC was able to reach an agreement on the fees, businesses in unincorporated Gwinnett will be able to begin selling alcohol on Sundays beginning May 6 instead of in June. Gwinnett County residents voted for Sunday liquor sales in March. The City of Duluth approved Sunday liquor sales Nov. 6. Sales started on Nov. 20 in the city.

Duluth’s tax revenue has increased 20 percent since implementing Sunday alcohol sales, according to a report 11Alive TV News aired Thursday (April 12) night. City Manager Tim Shearer was featured in the report. Before Duluth allowed Sunday sales of alcohol, beer and wine in March 2011, the city collected $37,069 in alcohol taxes from retail sales. This figure increased to $46,275 in March 2012, 11Alive News reported. The increase totaled about $25,000 dollars for the first three months of 2012. The 11Alive News report concluded that in almost every community the station contacted, the revenue from these sales had gone up. The report noted, however, that cities weren’t sure whether to attribute some of the increase to the improving economy…

For awhile, you'll still have to go inside a city limits on Sunday to buy packaged alcohol if Gwinnett voters pass the Sunday sales measure Tuesday (March 6). The referendum is included on the Presidential Primary ballot. A resolution passed last November by the Gwinnett County Board Of Commissioners designated June 1 as the start date for the Sunday sales. So Sunday, June 3, would be the first Sunday that retailers would be able to sell packaged alcohol in unincorporated areas of the county. If approved by a majority vote, the referendum would authorize retailers in Gwinnett, which already allows package sales of beer, wine and distilled spirits on other days, to sell alcoholic beverages from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Sundays. Stores …

November 8 municipal election features races for mayor, two city council posts.
It's official. The Duluth City Council voted Monday (July 11) to place a referendum on Sunday liquor sales on the November 8 ballot. A municipal election is also scheduled on that date. The city council had informally agreed at its April 25 work session to place the referendum on the city ballot if Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed Senate Bill 10 into law, and the governor did so. The law becomes effective July 1. Monday night's 4-0 council vote officially puts the issue before voters. (Councilwoman Marsha Bomar was absent from the meeting.) If approved by a majority vote, the referendum would authorize retailers in counties and cities that already allow package sales of beer, wine and distilled spirits to sell alcoholic beverages from 12:30…
