Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Duluth. If you have a black belt in Black Friday shopping, listen up: Area big-box retailers are gearing up to dazzle bargain hunters even earlier this year — starting on Thanksgiving Day! Walmart announced that it would open its doors at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 22, and offer holiday doorbusters while supplies last. These include deals on TVs, iPads, an electric scooter for $79 and a steam mop for $39. Not to be outdone, Target, Kmart, Sears, and Toys R Us are also planning to open at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night. Holidays are becoming so commercialized! I remember as a kid, I'm 55, family came from all over, kids slept on the floor and played continuously, older family sat around and visited for days, then everyone went home.
