Tinashe Kanonuhwa was crowned Miss Duluth High School 2013 in the largest pageant ever. Thirty girls competed for titles in each grade level and for the senior crown of Miss DHS March 30 at the high school. Tina is a member of the Gwinnett Student Leadership Team, Varsity Lacrosse captain, president of the DHS orchestra program, and a Lacrosse Scholar Athlete. She was recently accepted to Johns Hopkins University. It also was a landmark year for the Miss Duluth Middle School competition. A record 12 contestants vied for the Miss DMS title won by Caroline Long. The Duluth High School Parent Teacher Association hosted a “Meet & Eat” event to welcome new Principal Anthony Smith and his family. More than 25 Duluth businesses helped the PTSA sponsor the Jan. 24 event at the school. Parents, community leaders, and Gwinnett County Public Schools representatives were among the guests. State Rep. Brooks Coleman, R-Duluth, a former educator, also attended. Smith met and mingled with attendees and presented an update on campus safety measures including improvements in outdoor lighting. He urged parents to sign-up for emergency alert texts. Gwinnett County Public Schools is offering a summer registration period for its new online charter school Gwinnett Online Campus. This registration period will allow any student who missed the previous registration deadline an opportunity to enroll for the fall, according to a GCPS press release. Beginning this August, the charter school expands its services to include the middle school level. Registration is open to Gwinnett County residents who are entering sixth through 12th grade. The summer registration period closes Thursday, June 21. In order to register during this extended registration period, Duluth students and their parents must come to Gwinnett County Online Campus, located at 2595 Beaver Ruin Road in Norcross. Hull Middle and Peachtree Ridge High musicians assemble world's largest instrumental string ensemble.
Students from Hull Middle School in Duluth and Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee attempted to break a Guinness World Record Wednesday (May 2) as nearly 900 gathered to play their string instruments at Hull Middle School. They assembled the world’s largest instrumental string ensemble, reportedly beating the old record of 858 by 15 with 873 musicians. The students played a fiddle tune called “Bile Them Cabbage Down.” Their effort will be submitted for verification for entry in the record book. “It’s a once in a lifetime thing for the kids,” said Hull MS Orchestra Teacher Dana Lu, who added that she hoped this would get the students excited about playing their instruments. Parent or guardians of children who will be five years old by Sept. 1, 2012, and want to register them for kindergarten in Gwinnett County Public Schools, need to visit their neighborhood school on Thursday, May 3. This is annual kindergarten registration day for Gwinnett County Public Schools. Kindergarten registration for the new school year takes place before the summer to provide time to organize classes and to allow students to participate in readinesss activities. Eleven Duluth High School seniors signed letters of intent to accept athletic scholarships to attend colleges and universities at Spring Signing Day Thursday (April 26) in Jim Marelle Gymnasium. A reception honoring the students and their proud parents followed in the atrium of the 600 Building. The athletes, their sports, the colleges they plan to attend, and their parents are: Duluth High School Athletic Director and Asst. Principal Bill Navas welcomed students and guests to the ceremony in the gym. Duluth High School’s Chorus will perform Peach Jam on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, at 7 p.m. in the theater at Duluth High School, 3737 Brock Road. The chorus’ 16th annual musical variety show has a “Love” theme. Tickets are $10 for adults and children at the door. $8 tickets are available online. Senior Niki Vanden Hoek was recently crowned Miss Duluth High School 2012 after an evening of pageant competition in song and dance. The teachers and staff at Chattahoochee Elementary School in Duluth were surprised Monday (April 23) with a check for $15,000 presented by Steve Gornall, owner of Cartridge World in Johns Creek. Chattahoochee Elementary School was one of three winners of a recent contest sponsored by Cartridge World to provide technology funding for local schools. More than 1,000 schools in the United States and Canada participated in the contest. Funds can be used for technology and other school equipment. Chattahoochee Elementary will be part of the eCLASS digital learning pilot program next school year. Kroger’s Atlanta Division is donating a total of $22,000 in grants to 10 Gwinnett County schools as part of its Earning Plus Learning program. Chattahoochee Elementary School in Duluth is among the grant recipients. Kroger invited schools across the Atlanta Division to creatively demonstrate how they promoted the 2011-2012 theme “Healthy Living” in their communities. Two Gwinnett County Public Schools teachers, who happen to be father and daughter, will be honored this spring by their peers as Georgia’s top foreign language educators. The Foreign Language Association of Georgia (FLAG) recently selected Dr. Robert Patrick, a Latin teacher at Parkview High, as the 2012 Foreign Language Association of Georgia K-12 Teacher of the Year. In addition, the state group of foreign language educators named Miriam Patrick, a Latin teacher at Duluth High, as the 2012 Foreign Language Association of Georgia Teacher of Promise.
