View of 'The Hole' Next to Red Clay Theatre Obscured

The Duluth Public Works Department has erected a black covering on the construction fence in front of the depression next to the theatre.

Downtown Duluth merchants, shoppers and diners no longer have to look at the unsightly depression next to the Red Clay Theatre on Main Street. The Duluth Public Works Department has erected a black covering on the construction fence that now obscures the view of “The Hole” next to the theatre. The depression was created as the result of excavation required to replace the building’s end wall to stop flooding in the basement. The city is proceeding with plans to build an expansion of the RCT to include a larger pre-function area for the theatre with a bar and new restrooms and a rooftop tavern. Eddie Owen Presents, which stages concerts in the city-owned music venue, intends to operate the tavern.

This will be a “fifth Monday” council work session. The council canceled its regular April 22 work session. DDA Vice Chairman Rob Ponder informed the DDA at its April 16 meeting that Eddie Owen, who is managing and booking acts at the city-owned theatre, has indicated he is only interested in using a proposed second floor expansion for a …

RCT Music School Plans Proceeding

Duluth Downtown Development Authority votes to allow Eddie Owen to use $25,000 in funds donated by Duluth Fall Festival to build out Red Clay Theatre's basement for music school.

The Duluth Downtown Development Authority voted Tuesday (March 19) to authorize Eddie Owen to use $25,000 in funds donated by the Duluth Fall Festival to start building out the basement of the Red Clay Theatre for a music school. Owen manages the city-owned music venue and presents regular live music concerts. The DFF funds are deposited in the DDA’s bank account. Owen reported he has received three bids from contractors to do the build-out. The RCT also needs better signage in the front and rear of the building, he said, but the DFF funds would not cover both the improvements to the basement and new signs, Owen said. Theater-goers often go into downtown stores to ask where the theatre is located, he said. Owen told the DDA that he would …
