New Dawn Announces September Line-up

Three-act comedy 'You Can't Take It With You' concludes Labor Day Weekend.

Even as Duluth’s New Dawn Theater is presenting the final weekend of the comedy “You Can’t Take It With You,” it is announcing the September line-up of dramatic productions and musical performances. “You Can’t Take It With You” concludes Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30-Sept. 1, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 2, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and children under 16. Rising Stars Productions will present "The Velveteen Rabbit" Thursdays through Saturdays, Sept. 6-8, 13-15, and 20-22 at 11 a.m. Tickets: $6 in advance, $7 at the door. Coming to Duluth: Elvis!

Celebrate the 35th anniversary of Aloha from Hawaii with Mark Pitt’s Tribute to Elvis Saturday, Aug 11, at New Dawn Theater.

I taught Elvis in high school.  Mark Pitt was one of my most promising artists.  He drew, painted and sculpted with immense talent.  Mark was this shy young man in the ninth grade at Duluth when I started teaching.  He would often be humming or singing under his breath.  Back then, everyone was into the Beatles and Elvis was touring around the county to sell out crowds. A quiet young man who listened intently and had a very observant eye.  Mark had a dry sense of humor. He was one those students that I claim as my oldest children.  Granted, these favorite young’uns were only a few years younger than I, but I lied about my age then, too.  I added ten years when the kids asked me how old I was.  I couldn’t tell them that I was only a few …

'Sleeping Beauty' Continues at New Dawn Theater

Play based on popular fairy tale presented through June 17 at downtown Duluth theater.

New Dawn Theater Company's delightful production of “The Sleeping Beauty” continues through June 17. Performances occur at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with matinees at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.  The play is directed by Sherry Ingbritsen, president and artistic director of New Dawn Theater. Register Children Now for Summer Drama Camp

Camp offered by New Dawn Theater Company in Duluth open to children ages 6-16.

Spaces in New Dawn Theater Company's third annual Summer Drama Camp for students ages 6-16 are expected to fill up quickly. Campers will learn set building, costuming, make up application, acting and audition techniques, character building, voice projection, and other skills during the weeklong camp July 9-13. Hours for camp are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The young thespians will then present a public performance of "Mystery on 13th Street," a children's mystery by Pioneeer Publishing, at 8 p.m. Friday, July 13. During the week they will audition for the play, be assigned roles, learn their lines, and rehearse for the play. Instructors are trained and knowledgeable in all aspects of theater. 'Elvis' Military Tribute Concert Saturday

Popular Elvis impersonator Mark Pitt performing special Memorial Day weekend concert at New Dawn Theater in Duluth.

Elvis impersonator Mark Pitt returns to New Dawn Theater in Duluth for a special tribute concert honoring past and present military over the Memorial Day weekend. Pitt will perform some of Elvis’ greatest hits including a patriotic trilogy in a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 26. Current military and veterans who wear their uniforms or show a military ID get a $5 discount off concert admission. He will also hand out scarves to the ladies and teddy bears to children in the audience. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Vote Online to Help New Dawn Theater Win Awards

New Dawn Theater Company in Duluth has received 12 Broadway World nominations including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Play, Best Costume, Best Director, and Best Set Design. Chuck Mason of Duluth was nominated for Best Actor in his role as Lord Canterville in “The Canterville Ghost,” and the October 2010 New Dawn production was nominated for Best Play. Go to the Broadway World website and vote to help New Dawn Theatre win some awards. Voting continues through Dec. 31. Mason poses in costume next to a portrait of himself as Lord Canterville that was used on the set. The painting was done by his friend Rick Thompson.

New Dawn Offering Two Summer Drama Camps

Camps teach basic acting and auditioning techniques, character preparation and more.

Budding actors can learn acting and auditioning techniques and more at New Dawn Theater this summer. The Duluth theater company will be conducting two one-week Drama Camps July 11-15 and July 18-22. Drama Camp hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each camp will culminate in a recital on Friday night for family and friends. The drama campers will learn basic acting and auditioning techniques, character preparation, costumes, makeup application, stage crew and props, set design and construction and much more, according to Sherry Ingbritsen, New Dawn Theater Company's president and artistic director. They will also audition for a short play and will perform that play at their recital.
