New Dawn Theater Company in Duluth is cleaning out its storage building and workshop and having a huge two-day flea market Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12, featuring furniture, props, dishes, books, and more for sale. Hours for the First Annual New Dawn Theater Flea Market are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in the parking lot of the theater at 3087 Main Street in downtown Duluth. The city plans to demolish the deteriorating building New Dawn uses for storing props and building sets to allow for future downtown improvements. The theater will remain in its current location. New Dawn Theater's production of mystery play opens April 19 and continues through May 6. Dinner theater offered on weekends.
New Dawn Theater Company’s spring production of “Murder on the Nile” will be a dinner theater on the weekends. The play opens Thursday, Aug. 19, and continues through May 6. Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. A Mediterranean dinner will be catered by OPA! at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays followed by performances at 8 p.m. Beer and wine will be available from the Best of Brews on dinner theater nights. Dinner is not available for Thursday and Sunday performances. The theater will open at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays for patrons who want to see the play but do not want dinner. New Dawn Theater Company in Duluth presents the British comedy "Run for your Wife" Feb. 23 through March 11. Written by Ray Cooney, the hilarious play is being directed by Sherry Ingbritsen, New Dawn Theater’s president and artistic director. Ingbritsen describes the plot thusly: “John Smith lives in Streatham with his wife Mary, but, he also lives in Kenilworth with his wife Barbara. Neither know about the other, of course, but comedy ensues when a mugged and confused John gives the wrong address to the hospital. As part of a 10th anniversary series of celebrations, New Dawn Theater Company in Duluth will be hosting a Valentine Dinner-Dance from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. The ticket price of $20 a person includes dinner catered by Steverino’s, dancing and socializing for couples age 17 and up. Each couple will also get a keepsake photograph. Duluth’s New Dawn Theater Company will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a series of monthly events starting in January. The Best of Brews will present a Beer Tasting Evening at the theater as the first special event Saturday, Jan. 14. There will be two sittings at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. featuring different flavors and styles of beer. Tickets are $10 a person. Guests will have the option of purchasing 64 oz. growlers or smaller 32 oz. containers filled with their choice of draft domestic and imported beers to take home. First, let me say I am not or was not an obsessive Elvis Presley fan. I don't celebrate his birthday or make an annual pilgrimage to Graceland. I never understood all the hoopla about Elvis even though as a child I saw him sing and swivel his hips on the Ed Sullivan Show on our family’s black and white TV way back when. Actually, I recall that he mostly was shown from the waist up or his hips were blurred. And after later seeing Elvis star in the romantic and scenic movie “Blue Hawaii,” my best teenage girlfriend and I practically wore out the record album from the movie playing the songs over and over again. The heart-warming 1950s-era holiday play “Dad’s Christmas Miracle” continues this weekend at New Dawn Theater in Duluth. Grandpa Connor Murphy recalls the Christmas he wanted a go-cart more than anything, but his teacher Miss McLaughlin messes things up by handing out report cards just before Christmas vacation. His dismal report card dashes his hopes of getting the go-cart. The scenes switch between the elder Connor telling his grandchildren about his childhood Christmas and vignettes of his memories acted out by his family when Connor was a boy.
