National Weather Service issues Hazardous Weather Outlook for Duluth, Gwinnett County.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook is in effect for Duluth and Gwinnett County Thursday (April 11) afternoon through Thursday night. The National Weather Service forecasts strong to severe thunderstorms as a cold front pushes across Georgia. The thunderstorms are expected to develop along and ahead of the cold front. Although damaging winds will be the main threat, tornadoes and large hail also are possible. The bad weather is expected to arrive in the metro Atlanta area by mid-evening. Wind gusts of 15 to 20 m.p.h. estimated. Rainfall amounts could be heavy at times with one to two inches of widespread rain predicted. There could be brief minor flooding of steams and rivers and low-lying areas.

Update 6 p.m. Monday, March 18 The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for parts of northern metro Atlanta, including northwest Gwinnett County. The warning is in effect until 6:45 p.m. Duluth, Norcross, Peachtree Corners and Berkeley Lake are listed in the warning. ~ All that lovely spring weather over the weekend in Duluth soon will be a distant memory. Hazardous weather is forecast for the area Monday evening (March 18). According to the National Weather Service, storms will move into the Gwinnett area in the afternoon. First thunderstorms, then maybe.. snow. A strong cold front moving through the area is expected to give north Georgia a spring/winter mix of weather tonight. The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 p.m. tonight for most of central and north Georgia, including Duluth and Gwinnett County. Damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are possible. Then later tonight, cold air will rush in and bring the possibility of some frozen precipitation, though no accumulation is expected locally. Attention, storm chasers and severe weather aficionados. Gwinnett County and the National Weather Service want you. The county and the National Weather Service are teaming up to offer a free "storm spotter" class on Monday, March 4. The class will be at 7 p.m. at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville, according to a county newsletter. The class is free. The class will be taught by Barry Gooden, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The week-long rainy weather is expected to end Thursday night, but could turn to snow, according to the National Weather Service.
Duluth, there is good news and bad news to report on the weather. The National Weather Service is reporting that the rain that's been around all week is about to end tonight, but due to dropping temperatures, we could get a bit of snow this evening. The forecast Thursday calls for 100 percent chance of rain. There could be as much as an inch of rain today. Temperatures expected to reach 51. West wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the metro Atlanta area including Duluth.
A stalled front across central Georgia is expected to bring widespread rain to the metro area, according to the National Weather Service. The heavy, steady rain could cause flooding to areas with small streams, rivers and low lying areas to north Georgia. The NWS has issued a flood watch through tonight (Tuesday, Jan. 15). The rain is expected to diminish on Wednesday, but is expected to increase again on Thursday, which could cause additional flooding in the area. By Thursday night the rain is expected to end. Friday is predicted to be sunny with a high near 53 degrees. Evening temperatures are predicted to dip to 32 degrees.

According to weather.com, the National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning from 9 p.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday for Gwinnett County including the city of Duluth. Temperatures are predicted to dip into the mid-20s to lower 30s. Make preparations to protect tender vegetation and provice shelter and warmth for outside pets.

Gwinnett County and Duluth are included in the hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service that says severe thunderstorms–and isolated tornadoes–are possible tonight (March 2) after 7 p.m. A strong cold front moving through the Tennessee Valley into North Georgia late Friday is expected to reachinto central Georgia by Friday night. The primary hazards from thunderstorms will be isolated tornadoes, damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning and very heavy rain. Up to 1 or 2 inches of rainfall is possible. After possibly hitting northwest Georgia in the early evening, the severe thunderstorms are most likely to spread southeast across the rest of North Georgia through the evening and into the morning.

The National Weather Service has issued two weather advisories for the local area, including Duluth nd Gwinnett County. The first is a wind advisory that remains in effect from now until 1 a.m. Tuesday in north and central Georgia. Expect winds from the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. These winds are expected to diminish as the night wears on. A wind advisory means that sustained wind speeds of at least 20 mph or gusts to 35 mph or stronger are expected. The NWS is warning that winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Drivers are advised to use extra caution.
