New Boating Laws Now in Effect on Lake Lanier

The 2013 legislation lowering Georgia's BUI limit and adding safety regulations became effective Wednesday, May 15.

It's official: As of Wednesday (May 15), a new Georgia law regarding the Boating Under the Influence legal limit and other boating safety regulations is in effect. According to a Lake Lanier website, state officials will attend information sessions at local marinas around the state Wednesday. The visits will culminate at Laurel Park in Hall County, where Gov. Nathan Deal will give an address at 2 p.m. The new regulations are contained in Senate Bill 136, which Deal signed into law in April. Portions of the bill are named for late Buford brothers Griffin and Jake Prince and late Atlanta youth Kile Glover. The youths were killed in boating or watercraft-related accidents on Lake Lanier in 2012. The legislation lowers the legal blood-alcohol …

Lake Lanier Plans Boating Safety Event

Law enforcement agencies will be participating in the event in May.

With the 2013 summer boating and recreational season near, authorities at Lake Lanier are gearing up to stress boating safety. A Boating Safety Awareness Day will be held at Lake Lanier on Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., to help increase awareness of boating safety issues, according to a news release from lake officials. The event will be held at the Sunset Cove area. Several local law enforcement agencies will attend, as well as lake partner agencies and local retailers, the release said. Complimentary vessel safety inspections will be conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Boating safety concerns have increased after several high-profile deaths occurred on the lake in 2012. Deal Signs Legislation Lowering BUI Limit

The new law also increases penalties for those caught boating while intoxicated.

Gov. Nathan Deal signed SB 136, a bill to strengthen public safety on Georgia's waterways, on Tuesday (April 22) at the Holiday Marina at Lake Lanier. The legislation, a portion of which is known as the Jake and Griffin Prince BUI Law, lowers the legal blood-alcohol content for boaters from a .10 to .08. The new law also increases penalties for those found to be boating while intoxicated. “Far too many tragedies have occurred as a result of boating under the influence and inadequate boater education,” Deal said in a released statement. “Last June, I vowed to work with the General Assembly to pass legislation in honor of Jake and Griffin Prince, who lost their lives last summer in a tragic accident. Lake Lanier Body Identified as Missing Boater

Updated March 18, 6:52 p.m. Lake Lanier victim identification confirmed as George Marty Counts of Tucker after an autopsy on Monday. ~ Forsyth County Police pulled a body from Lake Lanier on Sunday morning (March 17). There's a possibility it's a fisherman from Tucker missing since last month, WSB-TV is reporting. George "Marty" Counts, 47, disappeared Feb. 11 while fishing at the lake, and search crews have been trying to find him ever since. Forsyth County Sheriff's Office deputies had discovered his 15-foot boat stranded on a bank and out of gasoline. The body is being examined by the local coroner's office in order to make a positive identification. ~ Tucker Patch

Search for Man Presumed Drowned in Lake Lanier Scaled Back

The search for a man who is missing and presumed drowned in Lake Lanier has been scaled back. Jeffrey Nause was reported missing shortly after midnight on Aug. 18. He was on a sailboat on Lake Lanier when he jumped into the water. After days of searching, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources announced the resources devoted to the search are being reduced. Dive operations have been put on standby, but surface and sonar searches will continue. Divers will be available to investigate should the sonar and surface searches produce a target of interest, according to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).  For more on this story, visit Buford Patch. Lake Lanier Search Resumes Aug. 20 for Missing Boater

Authorities and perhaps family members will resume searching Monday (Aug. 20) on Lake Lanier for the Atlanta man who still is missing after a boating incident early Saturday. WSB-TV reported that search teams ended their efforts Sunday afternoon because of weather and boat traffic. They are seeking Jeff Nause, 44, a Georgia Tech graduate and CEO of a semiconductor company. Nause jumped off a boat about 12:30 a.m. Saturday near Three Sisters Island, according to reports. Authorities say alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the case is being investigated as an accidental drowning. Updated 8:15 a.m., Aug. 19 A man is still missing and believed drowned after jumping from a sailboat, and a teen girl was cut by a boat propeller in separate Lake Lanier incidents Saturday (Aug. 18). MAN MISSING AFTER JUMPING FROM BOAT: WSB-TV reported that Atlanta resident Jeffrey Nause, 44, jumped from a sailboat into the lake waters about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. He was with a woman and another couple near Lake Lanier Islands. Kile Glover Funeral Set Friday in Buckhead

The youngster died from injuries suffered in an accident on Lake Lanier earlier in July.

The funeral for Kile Glover, the Atlanta youth who died from injuries suffered on Lake Lanier in July, will be Friday (July 27), according to media reports. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported that the services for the son of Usher's ex-wife will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Weiuca Road Baptist Church on Peachtree Road in Buckhead. Glover, 11, and a teenage friend were in an inner tube being pulled on a boat when they were hit by a personal watercraft. Glover suffered severe head injuries, was subsequently declared brain dead and was on life support for two weeks. He died July 21 after reportedly being removed from life support. The Georgia DNR has identified Jeffrey S. Hubbard, a family friend, as the driver of the personal …

Superstar Usher's Stepson Reported Brain Dead After Lanier Collision

The entertainer reportedly visited the Atlanta-area hospital Saturday.

Updated 7:20 p.m. The stepson of superstar entertainer Usher is reported brain dead after a recent collision on Lake Lanier, according to a media report. Prince Brothers' Funeral Service To Be Tuesday in Suwanee

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Suwanee Dam Road will be the site. Family and close friends are invited.

The funeral service for Griffin and Jake Prince, the Buford brothers who were killed in the boating collision last month on Lake Lanier, will be Tuesday in Suwanee. The service will be at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 4833 Suwanee Dam Road, according to a statement issued Monday by representatives of the Prince family. This church is very near North Gwinnett High School. The Prince family asks that attendance be limited to family and close friends, the spokesperson said. Those attending are asked to be seated at the church by 11:40 a.m.. Parking will be at the church, and overflow parking will be at North Gwinnett High.
