Gov. Nathan Deal announced Thursday afternoon that he will implement changes to the new high-occupancy toll lanes on I-85, just four days after the lanes were opened. Starting today, the rates will be lowered. “Looking at what we’ve learned from our first four work days with the HOT lanes, I’ve asked SRTA to improve utilization of the express lanes,” Deal said in a released statement. “In the short term, the toll rate will lower.…” The actual amount charged will continue to be variable to control the speed and volume in the lanes. Construction of the new Express Lane System along Interstate 85 continues with overnight work only through Wednesday. GDOT announced that work will require triple and quadruple lane closures and traffic pacing overnights in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. To enable Georgia motorists to more easily enjoy Labor Day weekend’s end of summer holiday, the Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related lane closures beginning at 5 a.m. next Friday, Sept. 2, and extending until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6. Construction on the I-85 HOT lanes continues this week, with nightly interstate lane closures on both northbound and southbound lanes to install cables and other equipment. Up to three lanes may be closed, with work focused on the left HOV lanes, which are being converted to HOT lanes. Any triple lane closures will occur after midnight, according to the Georgia DOT. Planning to use the high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes later this year? Motorists intending to travel in what are currently HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes may now register for the Peach Pass -- a small electronic sticker that will be used to bill motorists for their mileage in the HOT lane. For the past several months, the Georgia Department of Transportation has been working to convert the HOV lanes to HOT lanes. As part of the conversion of the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-85 to High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes, the Georgia Department of Transportation will continue work to install more than 60 signs along the I-85 corridor next week. Daytime and nighttime work is planned. Traffic pacing may occur between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. This week, as weather permits, one or two segments of the HOV or inside lanes along the median wall in both directions will be closed during the overnight hours. The conversion of the existing HOV lanes on I-85 to toll lanes is almost complete. But there are more changes than the access rules for many commuters. Gwinnett residents may have noticed the recent restriping of access points to the lane. Designated access and exit points are marked with a dashed double white line.
