Officials don't know who was responsible for the white foamy substance found floating on the surface of the Alcovy River Saturday, March 23, but they believe it wasn't toxic or hazardous. Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said firefighters responded to a call around 5:30 p.m. Saturday after a report of the substance on a four-mile stretch of the river between Hurricane Shoals Road and Freemans Mill Road. Rutledge said the source of the foam was traced to a feeder pipe behind an industrial complex off Petty Road near Lawrenceville. The substance was believed to be a "soap or detergent material." The popular Peachtree Corners restaurant's owner says it will be rebuilt and back in operation in a few months.
The fire that heavily damaged Dreamland BBQ in nearby Peachtree Corners Jan. 16 was accidental, according to Gwinnett County fire investigators. "The fire was determined to be caused by a neon sign transformer located in the attic space," said Lt. Colin Rhoden, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire Department. Rhoden said the sign was not being used by Dreamland and had been left there by the previous tenants. "It caused an electrical arcing condition in the attic which resulted in the ignition," explained Rhoden. Because the cause of the fire was deemed accidental, there will be no further investigation, he said. "The building is a total loss," said Rhoden. The burning roof collapsed into the restaurant "causing substantial damage to the…

Stay safe this New Year's when handling fireworks, sparklers.
The Gwinnett County Fire Department presented a demo Wednesday (Dec. 19) to show how to safely use fireworks and sparklers this season. According to the department, statistics show that in 2010 there were an estimated 8,600 injuries caused by fireworks treated in the U.S. hospital emergency rooms. While the only type of fireworks legal in Georgia are sparklers, the National Fire Protection Association reports that sparklers can cause serious burn injuries. They burn at about 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and are typically viewed by parents as relatively harmless fireworks for children, according to Gwinnett Fire. Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens, Gwinnett Fire Marshal/Assistant Chief Steve Hrustich and Georgia State Fire Marshal …

A neighbor called 911 reporting a fire showing in the laundry room. Upon arrival Gwinnett fire crews found fire and heavy smoke throughout the structure, Lt. Colin S.
