Distraction Burglaries Targeting Elderly

A suspect usually approaches a female victim believed to be home alone and asks her to go into the back yard for a seemingly legitimate reason. A second suspect enters through the front door and burglarizes the home, stealing mainly jewelry.

Gwinnett Police are currently investigating a series of bold distraction-style burglaries targeting elderly victims -- usually women home alone in the daytime. Cpl. Jake Smith of the Gwinnett Police Department reported a number of incidents like this have occurred recently in Gwinnett County. Several other metro Atlanta agencies are investigating similar cases, he said.   Duluth Police Det. Jimmy Purvis recently received a report of a similar incident occurring at a home on Davenport Road in the city limits. The suspects in these cases target elderly victims, usually women, who they believe are home alone, Smith said. Bath Salts Causes Duluth Man to Eat Own Feces

Gwinnett Police arrest Matthew Hammond in bizarre incident at Duluth residence on July 3.

Gwinnett Police arrested Mathew Hammond, 21, who acted violently and apparently ate his own feces while allegedly under the influence of bath salts during an incident in Duluth, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Friday. Police officers were called to a residence in the 2100 block of Worrall Hill Drive in unincorporated Duluth around 4 p.m. July 3 in response to a report from a woman who informed police that Hammond, her son, was "walking around out of his mind, armed with a knife," according to the police incident report cited in the AJC article. Duluth Woman Killed During Double Shooting at Hotel

Suspect arrested and charged in shooting that also wounded a man at Suburban Extended Stay Hotel in unincorporated Duluth.

The Gwinnett County Police Department Homicide Unit quickly arrested a suspect in a double shooting that resulted in the death of a Duluth woman and wounded a Duluth man Thursday night. James Rashad Clay, 24, of Duluth has been charged in the shooting that occurred about 9:56 p.m. July 5 at the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel in unincorporated Duluth, according to Cpl. Edwin Ritter, public information officer for the department. Investigators are searching for a motive, he said. Gwinnett County Police Uniform officers responded to the hotel, located at 2350 Stephens Center Drive, regarding shots fired. Gwinnett Police Identify Couple in Homicide-Suicide

Charles and Sylvia Junn were residents of Duluth and leave behind a 16-year-old son.

Gwinnett Police identified the victims in a tragic homicide-suicide Tuesday (April 10) evening in the parking lot at the Gwinnett Place Commons office complex as an Asian Duluth couple Charles Junn, 45, and Sylvia Junn, 44. Sylvia Junn shot herself when confronted by officers arriving at the scene about 7:30 p.m. after shooting her husband and wounding a woman that he apparently had an affair with in the past, according to Cpl. Jake Smith. The police investigation also revealed that all three worked in the office park on Satellite Boulevard in unincorporated Duluth, Smith said. Murder-Suicide Investigated in Duluth

Gwinnett Police report that woman shot a man and woman then turned the gun on herself outside office park.

  Gwinnett Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that occurred at the Gwinnett Place Commons office complex near Satellite Boulevard and Steve Reynolds Boulevard in unincorporated Duluth Tuesday night, Channel 2 TV Action News reported. A witness called called 911 after seeing two people lying in the parking lot of the office complex. When police arrived they confronted a woman armed with a gun who shot herself, according to Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith. She is deceased, Smith said. The woman apparently shot both victims, an Asian male and Hispanic female, and sped away running over the man, then returned to the office park. The female was alive and reported in critical condition after emergency surgery.

Gwinnett Police Warn Children Being Targeted

Gwinnett Police Special Victims Unit believes four incidents over past three months may be same person approaching children.

  Gwinnett Police are cautioning parents in Gwinnett County to be extra vigilant of their children and to report any suspicious behavior or activity in their neighborhoods because children may be being targeted for harm. Cpl. Edwin Ritter reported that the Gwinnett County Police Special Victims Unit believes four incidents of suspicious activity over the past three months may be someone targeting children, according to an announcement issued Monday (March 26). One person may be responsible for the incidents in which both male and female children were approached while walking by a black male driver. Get Gwinnett PD Records in Duluth

Records window at Gwinnett Police headquarters in Lawrenceville closed for renovation. Records now available at Central Precinct in Duluth.

  The “records window” for open records at the Gwinnett County Police Department Headquarters at 770 Hi-Hope Road in Lawrenceville is closed for renovation starting Monday, March 19. This renovation will take approximately three months to complete.  Anyone requiring records during the renovation period can pick them up at the Gwinnett County Police Central Precinct located at 3125 Satellite Blvd. in Duluth. Central Precinct Records is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Available at the Central Precinct’s Records window will be Criminal History consent forms, Local Records Check requests, Destroyed Letter requests, Open Records requests, etc.

Gwinnett Police Demonstrate Two New Robots

The devices will help police in SWAT callouts and dangerous situations where there may be a bomb or unknown chemicals.

  Gwinnett County Police Department recently purchased two new tools to help fight crime without having to put their officers in harm's way. They demonstrated the Hazardous Devices Unit's two newly acquired bomb robots. GCPD now has a total of four robots, allowing the HDU to respond to two different situations at the same time. The new robots are smaller and easier to maneuver than the older ones. "The robots we currently have are 10 years old or older," said Gwinnett Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter. "These robots were big and bulky. They were getting caught up inside the home or confined spaces." The money to purchase the robots, which totaled $206,000 for both units, came from a grant through State Homeland Security. They come equipped with …

Buford Man Charged With Murder in Sister's Slaying

Gwinnett Police discovered the woman's body during a welfare check Wednesday.

  Updated 7:14 a.m., March 8 Gwinnett Police said Thursday morning that they have charged a man with felony murder in connection with the slaying of his sister in nearby Buford. Dennis Roger Puckett has been charged with felony murder and aggravated assault over the death of Vickie Bowles, 54. Her body was discovered by police Wednesday during a welfare check in the 300 block of Powers Avenue. Both the victim and the suspect resided at that address. Police spokesperson Cpl. Edwin Ritter said officers discovered the woman's body on the floor of her apartment. Police found signs of violence and blunt force trauma about her body. Ritter said the investigation is continuing.

CD Warehouse Raided in Duluth

Gwinnett police conduct six-month investigation into suspected bootleg CDs and DVDs.

Gwinnett County Police raided two CD Warehouse locations Tuesday, including the one on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth, and confiscated thousands of suspected counterfeit CD and DVDs, Channel 2 news reported. The TV station reported Gwinnett police moved in Tuesday after a six-month investigation of the Duluth store and one on Buford Drive near the Mall of Georgia. The report said police were investigating possible counterfeiting of concert recordings and newly released movies. Store owner David Reed Kirk of Dacula was booked into the county jail Tuesday morning and charged with four counts related to the reproduction of recorded material, Dacula Patch reported. He was released late Tuesday on a $44,800 bond.
