2,000 Runners Registered for Boston 5K in Duluth

Gwinnett Place Mall and Fleet Feet sponsoring 'Run for Boston' Sunday, May 5. Proceeds to benefit Boston One Fund.

More than 2,000 runners are planning to assemble Sunday, May 5, at Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth for a timed 5K “Run for Boston.” “Gwinnett Place Mall and Fleet Feet are proud to present this local fundraising event to support Boston bombing victims,” said Debra Irving, property manager at Gwinnett Place Mall, in a news release. “With over 2,000 runners already registered,” Irving said, “this event is expected to be the largest single fundraiser for Boston.” All money raised will go to the Boston One Fund set up to support victims from the recent Boston Marathon bombings. Dress up the kids in their cute spring outfits and bring them to Gwinnett Place Mall for pictures with the Easter Bunny. The Duluth shopping mall is offering the Easter photo opportunity for families Friday, March 22, through Saturday, March 30. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Also, shoppers and visitors can hunt for special eggs that have been hidden throughout the mall. Belk at Gwinnett Place Mall Closing

Belk announces that the department store, one of the mall's five anchors, will close in August.

Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth has been dealt another blow. Belk, one of the mall’s five anchors, announced it is closing in August 2013. “The decision to close the store was made after carefully evaluating our business plans, competitive position and the financial performance of the store,” said Jessica M. Graham, vice president for communications and community relations for Charlotte, NC-based Belk. The department store provides clothing, shoes and accessories for the family, cosmetics, a wedding registry, and merchandise for the home. Belk occupies 126,822 square feet of retail space in the mall. Receiver Named for Gwinnett Place

McKinley, an Ann Arbor, MI-based company, appointed the receiver for distressed Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth.

McKinley, an Ann Arbor, MI-based company, has been appointed the receiver for distressed Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth, according to Atlanta citybizlist. Indiana-based Simon Property Group, former owner of the 1.285 million-square-foot mall, disposed of its interest in the shopping center earlier this year.  A $115-million loan on the property that matures this summer was transferred to a servicer that specializes in troubled loans last December. Competition from nearby newer malls and changing demographics have economically impacted Gwinnett Place Mall, which opened in 1984. Owner Gives Up on Gwinnett Place Mall

Simon Property Group has shed its interest in the struggling Duluth facility.

  The nation's largest owner of retail shopping malls has given up on Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth, according to a published report. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Simon Property Group, which also owns the Mall of Georgia in Buford and Discover Mills in Lawrenceville, has "disposed of (its) interest in" the mall, which is now only 83 percent occupied. Previously, Simon had transferred a $115 million loan on the mall to a special servicer, though the AJC reported that the special servicer is not the new owner. Also, Simon will continue to manage the mall “for the foreseeable future,” a company spokesperson said. Girl Scouts Selling Cookies at Gwinnett Place Mall

Booths selling cookies to be operational between 4-7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sundays Feb. 17-March 11.

  Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta (www.gsgatl.org) has once again teamed up with Simon Malls (www.simon.com) to offer customers an even easier way to purchase Girl Scout Cookies.
