Greater Gwinnett Place got an economic boost this week when it was designated an Opportunity Zone. Tax incentives that encourage business and job growth become available in the zone. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) in partnership with Gwinnett County, Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (CID) and Gwinnett Chamber Economic Development announced approval of the new Opportunity Zone in unincorporated Duluth Monday. Opportunity Zones assist areas with a strong economic base, but in need of revitalization, by providing tax incentives to generate the creation of new jobs. Work on the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at Interstate 85 and Pleasant Hill Road in unincorporated Duluth is scheduled to begin this summer following approval Tuesday (June 19) by the Gwinnett County Commission of the contract for its construction. Completion is anticipated in May 2013. The Diverging Diamond Interchange design allows drivers to cross over to the "opposite" side of the road on the interstate bridge to make turns onto I-85. The project also includes a new walkway in the median for pedestrians to use. Major roads in the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District are becoming more pedestrian-friendly. Construction on three streetscape and six sidewalk projects began in May, according to an announcement from the Gwinnett Place CID. The streetscape projects include installing benches, trash cans, brick pavers and landscaping to accompany new sidewalks along parts of Pleasant Hill Road and Satellite Boulevard. The Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (CID) has warmly welcomed Kimberly Morphis as the newest member of its board of directors. In announcing her appointment, GPCID Executive Director Joe Allen said Morphis has experience in retail development, which will greatly benefit the CID with its economic development goals. Morphis was appointed by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners as the county's representative. She replaces Justin Fanning on the GCPID board. A recent survey, undertaken as part of the 10-year update to the Gwinnett Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) study, indicated that drivers would make better use of transit alternatives if more options were available. The survey focused on alternative modes of travel within a 12-mile area that includes Gwinnett Place Mall, Discover Mills, Gwinnett Center, and Gwinnett Technical College. The survey was open to the general public and available online last fall with approximately 240 people participating, according to an announcement by the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (CiD). Gwinnett citizens are invited to look ahead 10 years and provide feedback on an update to the Livable Centers Initiative that will guide future growth and public improvements around Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth. The Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (CID) announced it is hosting an open house for the Gwinnett Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) 10-year Update from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19.
