Take the Pledge for a Healthy Heart

Gwinnett Medical Center offering education exhibits, health screenings Saturday at Gwinnett Center in Duluth from 8-11 a.m. Advance registration required.

  “Take the Pledge for a Healthy Heart” at Gwinnett Medical Center’s community celebration recognizing the new Strickland Heart Center. Advance registration is required. This free event in the ballroom of the Gwinnett Center in Duluth from 8-11 a.m. will feature screenings, educational booths, cooking demonstrations by an award-winning chef, classes led by certified fitness instructors, complimentary chair massages, and prizes. Giveaways including iPad 2s or iPods will occur every 30 minutes. A Bright Night for Rainbow Village

Rainbow Village, a Duluth-based transitional housing program that provides support services to homeless families with children, presented with D. Scott Hudgens Humanitarian Award.

  The Rev. Nancy Yancey, CEO of Duluth-based Rainbow Village, accepted the D. Scott Hudgens Humanitarian Award before a sold out crowd of 1,000 business and community leaders at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce’s 64th annual dinner Feb. 3 at Gwinnett Center in Duluth. The award is named for the late Scott Hudgens, a respected Gwinnett County developer and philanthropist. Founded 20 years ago, Rainbow Village provides transitional housing and support services to homeless families with children. Chamber to Honor Rainbow Village at Annual Dinner

Transitional housing program for homeless families to receive D. Scott Hudgens Humanitarian Award.

  Rainbow Village has been selected to receive the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce’s D. Scott Hudgens Humanitarian Award to be presented at the chamber’s 64th Annual Dinner Friday, Feb. 3, 2012. “Rainbow Village will be recognized before a crowd of over 1,000 community leaders for embodying the spirit of compassion and generosity to which Hudgens was so deeply committed,” according to an announcement in Rainbow Village’s newsletter. Duluth-based Rainbow Village, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2011, is a transitional housing program for homeless families with children that works to break the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence. Gwinnett Medical Opens Heart Center

The hospital received a $3.2-million dollar donation from Clyde and Sandra Strickland of Lawrenceville to help build the center.

Years of dreams have finally become a reality at Gwinnett Medical Center. The Lawrenceville hospital opened its new Strickland Heart Center this week. The center is named for its major benefactors Clyde and Sandra Strickland, who donated $3.2 million to the project. “The significant generosity of the Stricklands helped us realize the vision of advanced and comprehensive cardiovascular services in the Gwinnett community at an accelerated pace,” said Phil Wolfe of Duluth, president and CEO of Gwinnett Medical Center in an announcement about the Dec. 5 opening. “Without their gift, it would have taken much longer to pay for the new Heart & Vascular Center." Remember a Loved One, Honor Someone Special

  Remember a loved one or honor someone special with Lights of Love and Remembrance at Gwinnett Medical Center-Lawrenceville by making a donation to the Parish-Faith Community Nursing program at GMC. The Lights of Love and Remembrance ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in the hospital’s main lobby. There will be a special performance of holiday music by the First Baptist Church of Lawrenceville. Information will be available about the caring health ministry that parish and congregational nurses provide to Gwinnett County and surrounding areas. 500th PCI Performed at Gwinnett Medical Center

Gwinnett Medical Center achieved yet another milestone related to its expanding heart and vascular services. The 500th PCI procedure was recently performed at the hospital well ahead of projections. PCI is short for percutaneous coronary intervention, the formal name for coronary angioplasty and stenting. The patient was Carey Merritt, 69, of Ivey, GA, who suffered a heart attack Sept. 21 during a visit to his sister’s home in Loganville. A carpenter, Merritt was helping her with a bathroom renovation. When Merritt arrived by ambulance at GMC-Lawrenceville, it was discovered he had blockages in three of his major coronary arteries.  GMC cardiologists inserted three stents into his arteries in separate procedures over the course of a week. …

Breast Cancer Survivors Walk Red Carpet at GMC

Gwinnett Medical Center celebrates breast cancer survivors, new Gwinnett Breast Center.

Gwinnett Medical Center celebrated breast cancer survivors Tuesday (Oct. 4) at the new Gwinnett Breast Center on the Lawrenceville campus. Survivors shared their inspiring stories after walking down a red carpet at the entrance as part of the sixth annual celebration. About 250 guests toured the state-of-the-art facility, which combines screening and diagnostic services in a spa-like environment. The center offers such amenities as private changing rooms, lockers for storing personal items, and complimentary snacks and beverages. Featured speakers included Dr. Kimberly Hutcherson, a GMC-affiliated radiologist and breast cancer survivor, who self diagnosed herself at the age of 40.   The center includes the Marion Allison Webb Center for …

GMC Competing in Pink Gloves Dance Contest

Vote by Oct. 21. Top videos will received from $2,000 to $10,000 to support breast cancer research. Gwinnett Medical Center is dancing for the American Cancer Society.

Gwinnett Medical Center staff from the Lawrenceville and Duluth campuses have joined together to compete in the Pink Gloves Dance competition. Their video features representatives of Surgical Services, Operating Room, Labor & Delivery, Anesthesia, Environmental Services, Admissions, Pre-Op, and the Woman’s Pavilion.    Viewers can vote for the video online. Videos receiving the most votes will get from $2,000 to $10,000 for a charity that supports breast cancer research. The GMC team is dancing on behalf of the American Cancer Society.  All votes must be received by Oct. 21. Vote and share the video link with friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Gwinnett Medical Center Makes Hospital Honor Roll

Both GMC in Lawrenceville and Duluth were named to the Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability Quality Honor Roll.

Gwinnett Medical Center received a top honor from a statewide hospital organization. The Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability named GMC to their Quality Honor Roll. GMC was one of 61 medical facilities in Georgia to make the Presidential category, one of the highest on the list.  The selection was based upon data collected by the federal Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services for one year in 2010. “This is a great accomplishment for GMC,” said Joseph Parker, president of GHA in a release. “This recognition further underscores the commitment of the GMC staff ensuring that every patient receives the best, most effective health care possible.” The data collected measures how well a hospital's caregivers …

Blu Gets His Blood Pressure Checked at Health Fair

Blu, the Georgia Force Mascot, has his blood pressure checked at "A Healthier You" sponsored by Gwinnett Medical Center and Partnership Gwinnett’s at Gwinnett Technical College Friday (Aug. 19). The health fair featured educational booths, health screenings, and seminars on nutrition, fitness and stress management. About 215 members of the community attended the event, which included a free healthy continental breakfast.
