GMC Buys Vacant Duluth Center for Expansion

The 72,000 square-foot shopping center across from Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth to be used for future expansion.

The vacant shopping center on Howell Ferry Road across from Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth has been bought for hospital expansion. The purchase by Gwinnett Medical Center of the 72,000-square-foot center, known as the Ingles shopping plaza, occurred after several years of discussion. The official name of the center is At Howell Station. The property was purchased for $7.5 million. “Through this acquisition, we’ll have an additional 10 acres of land and 72,000 square feet of building space, which can be developed to support our strategic long-term growth,” said GMC Executive Vice President and COO Thomas Shepherd.  “Soon, we’ll evaluate existing needs and anticipated future growth to specify how this property can best serve the community,” …

GMC-Duluth Laundry Room Fire Contained

Hospital staff's use of fire extinguisher and sprinkler system credited with preventing fire at Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth from spreading.

Quick action by hospital staff and sprinklers kept a fire that apparently started in a commercial dryer in the laundry room early Saturday (July 28) morning at Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth kept the fire from spreading. When Gwinnett firefighters arrived, they found a small fire in the laundry room and moderate smoke on the hospital’s main level, Capt. Tommy Rutledge reported in a media release. Fire crews were dispatched at 6:16 a.m., arrived at the scene at 6:22 a.m. and brought the fire under control at 6:43 a.m. The fire was being controlled by the building’s sprinkler suppression system when the fire department arrived, according to Rutledge. Firefighters quickly deployed a single hose line to completely extinguish the remnants of…

Duluth Hospital Celebrates Fifth Anniversary Oct. 18

Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth has added specialized services like bariatric surgery, an advanced interventional radiology unit and robotic surgery since opening.

Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth is celebrating its fifth anniversary today. GMC-Duluth, an acute care hospital, first opened its doors on Oct. 18, 2006. Previously Duluth and surrounding areas had been served for nearly 70 years by Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital, which was Gwinnett County’s first hospital, now the Glancy Rehabilitation Center and a part of GMC. “We are driven to help the community realize their full potential by offering a compendium of care,” said Phil Wolfe, President and CEO of Gwinnett Medical Center in an announcement about the anniversary. “This is further emphasized by GMC-Duluth’s strategic, continued growth by adding specialized services like bariatric surgery, an advanced interventional radiology unit and robotic …
