The newly formed West Chapter of the Friends of the Gwinnett Library focuses on the literary needs and interests of the Norcross, Peachtree Corners and Duluth communities.
In a western-themed event, the West Chapter of the Friends of the Gwinnett Library teamed up with the Gwinnett County Public Library to bring in three top Georgia authors for a book-signing event. The event, titled the "Readin' -n- Writin' Round-Up," took place at the Norcross Cultural Arts Center in downtown Norcross Thursday (April 24). The evening began with an array of silent auction items, food, wine along with entertainmrnt provided by local musicians James Case and Charles Jundt. The Friends of the Library Western Chapter is a brand new venture for the Gwinnett County Public Library, which will be creating more chapters that will focus on several communities rather than the entire county. Gwinnett leaders think the libraries are necessary, but suggest implementing a new business model.
After another million-dollar budget cut to the Gwinnett County library system, county leaders think it's time for that organization to change its approach. "I would encourage the library to look at a new business model," Gwinnett District 2 Commissioner Lynette Howard said Thursday (Jan. 3) as the county's elected leaders passed the 2013 budget. Amid a still-tight revenue situation, commissioners cut $1 million in materials from the Gwinnett County Public Library budget, the latest of several large reductions to that system. Howard noted that the library branches "need to be a community center," but that current plans of coping with their situation are "not working," and she pledged to do "anything I can do" to help. Twenty-three decorated chairs turned in at Duluth Branch for contest as part of Gwinnett County Public Library's Fall Into the Arts program.
Drop by the Duluth Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library this week to see the creatively decorated chairs that have entered in for the “Chair-ish the Arts” competition. “Chairs have been turned in at all library branches, but Duluth had a monumental showing with 23 chairs,” Duluth Branch Librarian Lorena Gay-Griffin said. Most of Duluth’s entries were contributed by students at SKA Academy, a children’s art school in Duluth, she said. System-wide, 71 chairs were submitted. Voting on the chairs begins Monday, Oct. 8. Notebooks with photos of all chairs will be distributed to the various library branches in order for patrons to vote on their favorites. Votes may also be cast online. Karin Slaughter, bestselling author and library advocate, will appear at The Forum's Barnes and Noble’s two-day Bookfair to benefit the Gwinnett County Public Library on Saturday, July 7. The author will discuss and sign her new book "Criminal." Customers at the Peachtree Corners store can browse, enjoy stories, and sign-up for the library’s Summer Reading Program, as well as benefit the library with their purchases during the fair. The Peachtree Corners store is near Duluth. The Duluth location on Pleasant Hill recently closed. The opening of four new exhibits at the Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth including “Altered Books” and “Pulp Fashion: The Art of the Paper Dress” will be celebrated at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 9. Forty entries in the Gwinnett County Public Library’s Altered Book Contest and Pulp Fashion dresses featured at Duluth’s Barefoot in the Park Fine Arts Festival in May will be on display at the Hudgens starting Tuesday, June 5. Registration for the Gwinnett County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program “Dream Big!” is available online now and in all 15 library locations including the Duluth Branch. In addition to reading books, children and teens enjoy free programs and activities as part of the program. Puppet shows, magic shows, storytimes, and character visits will be available all summer long. About $400,000 worth of prizes and incentives has been donated by local businesses to encourage young readers, according to an announcement by GPL. Author and historic preservationist S. Lorraine Norwood will present a program on “Duluth History in Words and Pictures” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Duluth Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library. Norwood will share a collection of images from Duluth citizens, Georgia archives, and the Gwinnett Historical Society to show how the community has grown since its founding nearly 189 years ago and has preserved its heritage. Initially a quiet agricultural village of about 600 people, Duluth has become a progressive city in the metro Atlanta area. This event is free and open to the public. If you are a Georgian and you hold a valid library card, it can get you a free Georgia State Park "ParkPass" and Historic Site Pass for up to five days from your local library. The passes are good for free parking or admission at any of the 63 parks and historic sites statewide. Families interested in borrowing a ParkPass from the local library are advised to plan early though because of the expected popularity of the ParkPass loaner program. Supplies are limited.
