Nash, Brooks and Hunter to Be Sworn in Sunday

Group swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.

Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash, District 1 Commissioner Jace Brooks and District 3 Commissioner-elect Tommy Hunter, will be sworn in Sunday, Dec. 30 at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center.  Nash, who has served 18 months as chairman since winning a special election in March of 2011, was unopposed in both the Primary and General Election and will begin a full four-year term in January. Brooks, a former Suwanee City Coucil member, took office in September after he was the sole candidate to qualify for a special election to fill the District 1 vacancy created by the resignation of Shirley Lasseter. Gwinnett to Buy New Swift Water Rescue Truck

The emergency vehicle is designed to transport rescue crews and equipment to emergencies on the Chattahoochee River or Lake Lanier.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved funding Dec. 11 for a new swift water rescue truck to be based at Fire Station 14 in Buford. The $229,461 vehicle is designed to transport rescue crews and equipment to emergencies on the Chattahoochee River or Lake Lanier and will be funded through the 2009 SPLOST sales tax program.  Gwinnett commissioners also accepted a $20,000 grant from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency to replace tools and equipment used on the search and rescue truck based at Fire Station 24 near the Mall of Georgia and a $16,764 grant from the Georgia Trauma Care Network to help replace trauma-related emergency medical equipment used by firefighters/EMTs throughout the county. “We’re very grateful for these …

New Energy Excise Tax Eyed

Duluth considering entering into agreement with Gwinnett County to share proceeds of energy excise tax to replace energy sales tax.

The Duluth City Council is considering entering into an agreement with Gwinnett County to receive its fair share of an energy excise tax that would eventually give the city an estimated $264,000 in revenue a year. This is similar to the way the county and city share sales tax revenue. The city informally agreed to sign the intergovernmental agreement at its Oct. 23 work session, but must officially act on it at its upcoming Nov. 12 meeting. The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to adopt the countywide energy excise tax on manufacturing at its Nov. 27 meeting. Duluth, Gwinnett Leaders To Meet on HB386

The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25. at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.

Duluth leaders are planning to participate in a special meeting with Gwinnett leaders.  The reason for the special Gwinnett meeting is a session on a new Georgia law, HB386, which was passed during the recent session of the General Assembly. The meeting, which also will involve other Gwinnett cities, is set for 5 p.m. at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville. Fanning, Cain Sentenced to 57 Months Each for Bribery, Drug Trafficking

John Fanning, son of former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, and "Skip" Cain were sentenced in U.S. District Court for bribery and drug trafficking.

John Fanning, 34, of Dacula, son of former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, was sentenced to 57 months in prison Tuesday (Sept. 18) in U.S. District Court in Atlanta for bribery and drug trafficking. Carl “Skip" Cain, 66, of Flowery Branch, also received a sentence of 57 months on the same charges. Both prison sentences are without parole. U.S. District Judge Charles A. Pannell Jr. followed the sentencing recommendations of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Atlanta, based on the defendants' cooperation in an ongoing investigation of corruption in Gwinnett County government. Brooks To Take Gwinnett BOC Office Sept. 17

The former Suwanee City Council member will attend his first Gwinnett meeting Tuesday.

Jace Brooks, elected in July to represent District 1 on the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners, will be sworn into office Monday, Sept. 17. Brooks will attend his first Gwinnett BOC meeting Tuesday, Sept. 18, according to a press release issued Friday by Gwinnett County. Brooks, a Suwanee City Council member for 10 years from 2002-12, will be filling the remainder of the term that was vacated when Shirley Lasseter resigned in May amid federal bribery charges. He has no opposition in the November General Election. Also, he was the only qualifier for a special election in November to fill her unexpired term. Lasseter Sentenced to 33 Months

Shirley Lasseter's cooperation in corruption investigation results in reduced sentence for her and a bribery charge against former Gwinnett Planning Commission member.

Former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, 64, was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison without parole in federal district court in Atlanta Wednesday (Sept. 5) for accepting bribes. Lasseter pleaded guilty May 31 to accepting $36,500 in bribes during 2011 from an FBI agent posing as a South Florida real estate developer to support a proposed real estate development in her district. Lasseter resigned from her District 1 seat on the Gwinnett County Commission that day. She represented Duluth, Suwanee and Sugar Hill on the commission. Her son John Fanning, 34, of Dacula, and Carl “Skip” Cain, 65, of Flowery Branch, pleaded guilty in May to participating in the bribery scheme and to drug trafficking. Their sentencing was delayed…

Gwinnett Begins FY2013 Budget Process

County leaders will begin hearing proposals from various agencies Wednesday.

Elections and Service Delivery Strategy (SDS) matters in their rear-view mirror, Gwinnett County officials Wednesday (Sept. 5) will begin the process of formulating their fiscal year 2013 budget. Over the next five business days, representatives from various county departments will make their respective pitches to elected officials in hopes of squeezing the most funds for their areas from the overall budget. Elected officials and financial staff members then will juggle priorities to formulate the overall spending plan, which should be unveiled in November. After Recount, Hunter Still Wins

The recount requested by current Gwinnett County Commissioner Mike Beaudreau yielded the same results as the runoff for the District 3 post.

On Monday afternoon, current Gwinnett County Commissioner Mike Beaudreau requested a recount after falling behind following a runoff. He trailed opponent Tommy Hunter in the race for the District 3 seat in a runoff on Aug. 21st by 57 votes. The recount was completed Tuesday evening at about 6:15 p.m., and the outcome stands. Hunter has defeated Beaudreau by just 56 votes. Both are Republicans. Here are the numbers: Hunter will take office in January.
