The current sales tax expires in March 2014, and leaders must approve a new referendum.

Suwanee and Gwinnett voters, get ready -- again. Gwinnett could offer up a new SPLOST vote in 2013. The current one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax, which was approved by voters in 2008, expires in March 2014. For the process to continue, voters must approve a new tax. A new SPLOST vote is possible for November, according to county spokesperson Joe Sorenson. According to state law, a vote could only be held in March or November, but March would be too soon for all requirements to be met. Among the requirements: commissioners and mayors in the county must meet to discuss potential SPLOST projects. No such meeting is scheduled. According to county spokesperson Joe Sorenson, Gwinnett County Commisssion Chairman Charlotte Nash has …

Comparing Tax Rates in Gwinnett Cities

Duluth's 2012 tax millage rate of 5.991 mills is the same as in 2010 and 2011.

The City Of Suwanee is preparing to lower its 2012 tax millage rate to 4.93, which would be the third straight year it has dropped the property tax benchmark. Duluth earlier adopted the same tax millage rate it has had in effect for 2010 and 2011. So how do city tax millage rates compare in Gwinnett County? Some examples: Most of Gwinnett's 800,000-plus residents live in unincorporated areas, and so the county's rate determines their tax bill. The county's rate is 13.02, according to Gwinnett spokesperson Joe Sorenson. It's the same for unincorporated and incorporated areas. However, the settlement of the Service Delivery Strategy dispute this year will come into play in the future, Sorenson added. In 2013, service districts will be set up…

TSPLOST Topic of Presentation in Suwanee

Gwinnett transportation director says traffic congestion is an issue in the county.

Kim Conroy, Gwinnett County director of transportation, technically can't be an advocate for the Transportation Investment Act, the voter referendum also known as TSPLOST. "We do see traffic as one of the most important things we face," Conroy said after Monday's 45-minute video slide presentation at Suwanee City Hall. "Congestion is an issue." And one resident in attendance agrees. "Improvements are needed," said Hank Duren of Buford, who attended the session with his wife, Carmen Duren. She added: "New people are moving here all the time." The price, of course, is adding a 1 percent sales tax to Gwinnett County and metro Atlanta for the next 10 years, …
