Businessman, Golfer Tees Up $10,000 for Toys for Tots

A golf tournament next week will also help support the cause.

A businessman had participated in the local charity golf tournament that supports Toys for Tots in years past—and he was amazed by the scope of the effort to collect toys for families in need. Last year, the North Atlanta Marine Toys for Tots collected 714,000 toys that were handed out to 320,000 kids in the 18-county metro area, said Tom McDermott, a Norcross resident who organizes the golf tournament at Berkeley Hills as a part of the effort.   So this year, Rick Wells, who owns a controlling share in Magnolia Plastics in Doraville, asked McDermott what the cost might be for the operations of the Toys for Tots project. Golfers Tee Off Monday in Duluth Hospice Benefit

Golf tournament at St. Ives Country Club helps patients served by Peachtree Christian Hospice.

Golfers will tee off Monday, Oct. 3, in Peachtree Christian Hospice's 11th annual Golf Classic at St. Ives Country Club. The tournament, played in the format of "select drive, two best balls of the foursome," is an important fundraiser benefiting Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth and its patients. Since opening in 2000, PCH has served more than 6,500 patients from metro Atlanta and Georgia. Palmer Dodge is sponsoring the "hole-in-one" prize with a new Dodge Challenger. Former Green Bay Packers Super Bowl Champion Eric Matthews and Atlanta Falcons alumni Brian Finneran and Paul Ryczek are slated to participate in the festivities. Duluth, Suwanee Kiwanis Host Tourney Aug. 16

Annual golf tournament has raised money for children and family organizations in Gwinnett County for nearly 20 years. Goal for 2011 is $15,000.

Golf enthusiasts who want to enjoy a challenging round of golf at one of metro Atlanta's finest courses -- Bear's Best -- and help support children and family organizations in Gwinnett County still have time to register for the annual golf tournament sponsored by the Kiwanis Clubs of Suwanee and Duluth on Aug. 16. The tournament, which has been a staple among fundraisers in the county for nearly 20 years, will be played on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course in the upscale gated community of Edinburgh in Suwanee. The cost to enter is $150, half of which is tax-deductible. Tourney coordinators Jim Johnson and Deric Governale announced the format for the event will be Four Person Lauderdale, and registration will continue through the start of …

Welcome Signs for 93rd PGA Championship Put Up

Sixty banners line route for spectators from Gwinnett Arena in Duluth to Atlanta Athletic Club.

Some 60 banners announcing the 93rd PGA Championship will greet drivers traveling into Johns Creek on State Bridge and Medlock Bridge roads. The 5-foot vinyl flags, paid for by the Johns Creek Convention and Vistors Bureau, made their debut Thursday (July 14). The signs are located on State Bridge Road east of Medlock Bridge Road (SR141) to the Chattahoochee River and on Medlock from the river to Bell Road. They are strategically placed along the route that PGA spectators will be traveling on shuttle buses from the Gwinnett Arena in Duluth to the Atlanta Athletic Club, the site of the championship Aug. 8-14.
