A new traffic signal will begin flashing Thursday, Feb. 28, at the intersection of State Route 120/Duluth Highway and Meadowbrook Parkway/Legacy Parkway in unincorporated Duluth. The traffic signal will be in flash mode for testing. If weather permits and testing goes well, the signal will be fully operational Thursday, March 7, Teri Pope, communications officer for District One-Northeast Georgia of the Georgia Department of Transportation, announced in a press release. An analysis of traffic at the intersection demonstrated the need for a signal, Pope said. The intersection met federal requirements for a traffic signal, so it is being installed, she said. The Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend construction-related lane closures on all interstates and major state routes from 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, through midnight Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, for holiday travelers. The exception will be incident management or emergency maintenance-related lane closures that could become necessary, according to a press release issued by GDOT. Also, crews may still be working, and heavy equipment may remain staged in close proximity to highways. Safety concerns may require some long-term lane closures remain in place. The Georgia Department of Transportation are advising motorists to expect delays along I-85 between S.R. 120 and Boggs Road due to work on upgrades to the express lane. "This weekend and the weekend of October 26-28, motorists should prepare for possible traffic disruptions and delays due to southbound and northbound I-85 Express Lane closures," announced GDOT in a press release. "The closures, which will begin on I-85 near Duluth Highway/SR 120, will accommodate construction for a permanent southbound Express Lane access point near the Boggs Road overpass. Work on the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at Interstate 85 and Pleasant Hill Road in unincorporated Duluth is scheduled to begin this summer following approval Tuesday (June 19) by the Gwinnett County Commission of the contract for its construction. Completion is anticipated in May 2013. The Diverging Diamond Interchange design allows drivers to cross over to the "opposite" side of the road on the interstate bridge to make turns onto I-85. The project also includes a new walkway in the median for pedestrians to use. The DDI is a collaborative project by the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (GPCID), Gwinnett Department of Transportation and Georgia Department of Transportation. Residents in Georgia will now be able to get updates of inclement weather and road conditions from the Georgia Department of Transportation via Facebook, Twitter and a newly designed website. A preview of the new inclement weather section of the department’s website was a highlight at the November meeting of the Georgia Transportation Board. The page went live Nov. 17 and can be viewed at www.dot.ga.gov/winterweather. In addition to the new webpage, social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter will be used to distribute information in the event of severe weather. Officials and neighborhood residents applauded improvements to a section of Davenport Road off Buford Highway and snipped a purple ribbon stretched across the road Thursday (Sept. 1) afternoon. The ceremony celebrated completion of improvements that included new five-foot sidewalks on both sides of the road, curb and gutter, drainage, resurfacing, and widening to accommodate two full-lane widths. Several residents walked over to the ribbon-cutting ceremony from their homes on the new sidewalks, which increase pedestrian mobility and safety in the neighborhood. The City of Duluth is inviting the Davenport Road neighborhood and other citizens to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark completion of road improvements and installation of sidewalks at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1. The Davenport Road project has dramatically improved the appearance of the neighborhood, and the sidewalks have increased pedestrian safety and accessibility to downtown Duluth. As weather permits, lane closures are scheduled to occur overnights only next week on the I-85 Express Lanes project in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. Work will require triple lane closures and traffic pacing overnights Wednesday through Saturday, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced. The work plan requires nightly lane closures northbound and southbound. High Occupancy Vehicle lane or left lane will close overnight at these locations. Construction of the new Express Lane System along Interstate 85 continues. Lane closures are scheduled to occur during the day and overnight on the project in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. Installation of overhead signage is almost complete. Daytime work will occur this week. Work hours northbound are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and southbound work hours at from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. between peak commute hours. Two work zones will occur daily as weather permits this week.
