Roundabout Sculpture Design to be Kept a Secret

Guests at a reception to meet the artist and view the design saw a model of the sculpture. But the entire design won't be made public until the official unveiling at the end of the year.

A model of Milton artist/blacksmith Michael Dillon’s sculpture for the Duluth Roundabout was unveiled at a reception Tuesday (April 30) for citizens who attended to meet the artist and view the design. They’ll likely be the last to see it until the full-scale sculpture is installed and officially unveiled in a ceremony at the end of the year. The city is keeping the sculpture design a secret. But it plans to release images of its parts periodically to generate excitement. Citizens are invited to name the sculpture by emailing suggestions to Name.it@duluthga.net. Duluth Patch wasn’t allowed to take photos of the model, but can describe it for readers. It's uplifting and grounded at the same time. The sculpture has an agricultural theme that…

Meet Roundabout Artist, View His Sculpture Design

Duluth citizens invited to meet Michael Dillon and see his design for sculpture to be installed in center of Roundabout.

Duluth citizens are invited to meet Michael Dillon, the artist/blacksmith selected by the Gateway Art Project Committee to create and install a sculpture in the Roundabout, and to view his design from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, in the Community Room at Duluth City Hall. The Duluth City Council is expected to sign a contract soon with Dillon, the owner of Dillon Forge in Milton, GA, for the sculpture. The GAP Committee chose Dillon’s design from 85 entries submitted in a design competition. Considered a gateway to the city, the Roundabout links West Lawrenceville Street, McClure Bridge Road and Irvindale Road. A Hospital Connector is proposed to be built and connect to the Roundabout in the future. The public art project, which has been…

Considered a gateway to the city? I don't think gateways are supposed to be in residential areas.   more ›

Duluth Gets Roads Near Sculpture Site Back

Duluth City Council accepts agreement with Gwinnett County Commission returning maintenance of West Lawrenceville Street and McClure Bridge Road to the city.

The Duluth City Council Monday (April 8) accepted an agreement from the Gwinnett County Commission returning maintenance of West Lawrenceville Street and McClure Bridge Road to the city. The commission approved entering into an intergovernmental agreement with the city for the maintenance of the roads to be transfered back at its April 2 meeting. The agreement clears the way for the city’s Roundabout sculpture to be installed. The council postponed a vote on approving a contract with Milton artist/blacksmith Michael Dillon to fabricate and install the sculpture until the city attorney can review a change requested by Dillon. Maintenance of the roadways had been transfered to the county as part of the Service Delivery Strategy settlement. …

Roundabout Sculpture Artist Selected

Michael Dillon of Dillon Forge in Milton, GA, named winner of design competition by GAP Committee.

The Gateway Art Project Committee and Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris announced the winner of the design competition for a sculpture to be installed in the Duluth Roundabout, but the design is being kept a secret probably until its unveiling. Artist/blacksmith Michael Dillon, owner of Dillon Forge in Milton, GA, was named the winner. The committee’s decision followed interviews with the three finalists and presentation of mock-ups of their proposed projects Feb. 19. Dillon has been creating works of art for 20 years, according to the city’s March 1 announcement. Eighty-five letters of interest in the competition initially were submitted by artists from all over the country. The entries were reduced by the committee to 18 semifinalists, then to …

85 Gateway Art Entries Submitted

Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris announces that 85 applications have been received by the Gateway Art Project Committee from artists seeking to design Roundabout art.

Duluth’s Gateway Art Project Committee is busy reviewing the 85 applications it received by the deadline to design and install a piece of art for the grassy center of the new Roundabout. Oct. 10 was the deadline for artists to submit letters of interest and qualifications. This is an increase from the previously reported number of 70 entries. Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris, who formed the committee to oversee the public art process, announced the response to the call for artists at the Duluth City Council work session Oct. 22. The GAP Committee had issued the invitation to artists Sept. 4. Despite the large number of impressive entries, GAP still plans to select and notify semi-finalists by Nov. 2, the mayor said. The timeline requires semi-…

I agree, maybe a small single tree in the middle and some knockout roses or azaleas. Simple but natural, not some man made piece of art. If they have to put artwork there, then I vote for pink flamingos. ;-)   more ›
