Duluth citizens invited to meet artist/blacksmith Michael Dillon and see his design for the Roundabout sculpture.
Michael Dillon, the artist/blacksmith selected by Duluth’s Gateway Art Project Committee to create and install a sculpture in the Roundabout, will be introduced and his design unveiled Tuesday, April 30. The Duluth Fine Arts League is hosting the event from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, in the Community Room at Duluth City Hall. Dillon is the owner of Dillon Forge in Milton, GA. “I felt an immediate connection to Duluth’s history, as well as their modern day community vision and values,” Dillon said in a news release issued by the City of Duluth. “I was also very excited by AGCO’s involvement in the project, as their machinery is a part of my history, and inspires my personal aesthetic.” The public art project has been funded with …

Gateway Art Project Committee narrows list of 18 semi-finalists to three finalists to design art for center of the Roundabout.
The list of 18 semi-finalists to design art for the new Roundabout in Duluth has been narrowed to three. The three finalists were selected by Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris and the Gateway Art Project Committee based on design concepts submitted in December. The semifinalists were chosen on the basis of letters of intent and qualifications submitted in October. A total of 85 artists from throughout the country entered the design competition. The three artists remaining in the design competition are Douwe Blumberg of De Mossville, KY; Michael Dillon of Milton, GA; and Koryn Rolstad of Seattle, WA. Gateway Art Project Committee receives 70 responses from artists interested in designing public art on Duluth Roundabout.
Duluth’s Gateway Art Project Committee has received 70 letters from artists interested in designing a piece of art for the center of the new Roundabout, a major entrance to downtown Duluth. The deadline for artists to submit letters of interest and qualifications was Oct. 10. The GAP Committee issued an invitation Sept. 4 for artists to design and install a piece of art on the grassy center of the Roundabout at the intersections of West Lawrenceville Street, McClure Bridge Road and Irvindale Road. The Hospital Connector, a fourth roadway, will also connect to the Roundabout in the near future. The committee now will begin narrowing the 70 applicants to the semi-finalists, who would be notified Nov. 2. The timeline requires semi-finalists …

Gateway Art Project Committee accepting entries from artists interested in designing public art project for Roundabout.
Duluth’s Gateway Art Project Committee has issued a call for artists to design the Roundabout public art project at this major entrance to the city. Now the committee is accepting entries and refining the criteria to select the semi-finalists, finalists and winner. GAP Committee member Beth Reeves reported at the latest meeting Sept. 25 that it has received six submissions so far and one letter of interest. The entries include artists from New York and the Phillipines, she said. The call for artists was issued Sept. 4. Duluth Gateway Art Project Committee plans to issue call Aug. 1 for artists to design art for center of Roundabout.
Several members of the Gateway Arts Project Committee will be making a presentation at the Duluth City Council’s July 23 work session on public art to be commissioned for the grass circle in the center of the new Roundabout that links McClure Bridge Road, Irvindale Road and West Lawrenceville Street. In an update to the council at its regular July 9 meeting Mayor Nancy Harris told the council the GAP Committee plans to issue a call for artists to design the Roundabout art at the major gateway to the city Aug. 1. AGCO has donated $100,000 toward the cost of the art, and the city has budgeted $2,000 for landscaping, which the mayor said would be designed as part of the art project. “The budget has expanded to $100,000-$120,000,” Harris said…
