Duluth MS Students Score Well on Writing Test

Gwinnett County Public Schools released a summary of the January state writing test for eighth-grade students. Also, see scores from individual middle schools.

Gwinnett County middle school students scored well in the recent state writing test, administered in January to eighth-graders. So did students from Duluth and Hull middle schools. More than 12,600 students took the test in January 2013, and Gwinnett County Public Schools released overall results March 25 followed by results from individual GCPS schools. Overall, the district’s average passing rate (met or exceeds standard) remains high and increased one percentage point this year, from 93 percent in 2012 to 94 percent now, according to officials. Student Injured in Bathroom Altercation at Duluth Middle School

Student reportedly cut during the altercation by a sharp instrument that wasn't a knife.

A Duluth Middle School student was injured during a bathroom altercation with another student in the boy’s bathroom during a classroom break Thursday (Dec. 6). Sloan Roach, executive director of communications and media relations for Gwinnett County Public Schools, confirmed Friday morning that the incident had occurred, that the student had been cut during the altercation and required medical attention. His injury reportedly was not life-threatening. "A sharp instrument was involved, but it wasn't a knife," Roach said. Parents of the two sixth grade male students were contacted. The injured student's parents transported him to obtain medical treatment, Roach said. A letter was sent home by the principal Thursday afternoon informing school…

Online Campus Info Sessions for Duluth Feb. 2

Information to be presented Feb. 2 at Duluth High School for prospective students.

  Gwinnett Online Campus, a full-time online learning option for public school students, will offer sessions Thursday, Feb. 2, to provide information to help Duluth High School and Duluth Middle School students make informed decisions about enrolling. The sessions for Duluth schools will be presented in the Theatre at Duluth High School. The middle school session will occur from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. followed by the high school session from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Registration for the 2012-13 school year starts Feb. 1 and continues through Feb. 29. Students can get more information through the counselor’s office at the local middle or high school and on the GOC website. Duluth High School Achieves AYP in Amended Report

Amended report indicates 82.5% of Gwinnett schools met Adequate Yearly Progress standards.

Duluth High School has now met state Adequate Yearly Progress standards for 2010-11 based on an amended report issued by the Georgia Department of Education, according to an announcement by Gwinnett County Public Schools. Ferguson Elementary School also achieved AYP after recalculations that included appeals, summer graduates and summer retest scores for the CRCT (Criterion-Referenced Competency Test), CRCT-Modified and Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT). This means that in a year when state standards rose, 82.5 percent of Gwinnett County’s public schools met the state’s accountability goals, Jorge Quintana, GCPS director of media relations, reported. DMS educator certified as master teacher. Valedictorian Ronald Kurtz presented award.

Jean Sohn of Duluth Middle School was among 14 Gwinnett County Public Schools educators who finished the 2010-2011 school year certified as Master Teachers. She earned the certification through a statewide program that honors experienced teachers who have made a difference in student achievement. Certified Master Teachers become part of a pool of candidates eligible to become Academic Coaches, professionals who serve as mentors for their peers.
