A vacant home at 2081 Hopkins Mill Road in Duluth was declared a total loss following a fire reported shortly after midnight Tuesday (April 9). Gwinnett firefighters responded to a 911 call reporting a neighboring house on fire, according to Capt. Tommy Rutledge in a news release. The caller reported the home engulfed in flames at the time of the call. Crews found the one-story brick home over a basement fully involved on arrival, Rutledge said. Firefighters deployed attack hose lines and battled the blaze from the outside before being able to go inside. Flames were seen venting through the roof as fire crews sprayed water from several hand lines and master streams to control the blaze. The fire was brought under control about 12:48 a.m…

A fire that apparently started in the fireplace caused significant damage to a house in the 4700 block of Fairway View Court NW in Duluth early Thursday (Dec. 27) evening. Gwinnett firefighters responded to a report from an occupant about a fire in the home. A neighbor also called reporting flames visible from the back of the house, according to a report released to media by Capt. Tommy Rutledge. Firefighters were dispatched at 5:53 p.m. and arrived at the scene at 5:58 p.m. The fire was brought under control at 6:26 p.m., Rutledge reported. A female occupant was reportedly cooking in the kitchen when she smelled smoke. A fire heavily damaged a home in the 3900 block of Pine Needle Drive in Duluth early Monday while the residents were out of town. No injuries occurred. A neighbor called 911 reporting a fire showing in the laundry room. Upon arrival Gwinnett fire crews found fire and heavy smoke throughout the structure, Lt. Colin S. Rhoden reported in a press release. Firefighters battled the fire from the outside of the house until flames were knocked down enough to enter the structure. The mass of the fire was in the room behind the carport. The fire caused substantial fire damage to the structure and a collapse in the room that had the majority of fire involvement, Rhoden said. Gwinnett firefighters quickly brought a house fire in the 4600 block of Fairway View Court in Duluth under control after lightning apparently struck the home, according to Lt. Colin S. Rhoden. Firefighters were dispatched at 4:48 p.m. with the fire reported under control at 5:16 p.m. Wednesday (July 18). Three occupants were home at the time of the fire, and all escaped unharmed. A lightning strike may have started a fire that damaged a home in the 2100 block of Broadfield Run in Duluth Tuesday (July 3) evening. Gwinnett firefighters were dispatched at 8:55 p.m., and the fire was under control by 9:29 p.m., according to Lt. Colin S. Rhoden, public information officer with Gwinnett Fire/Emergency Services. No injuries were reported. The resident(s) were not at home, but arrived while firefighting efforts were in progress. A caller told the dispatcher they saw lightning strike the house and observed smoke and fire on the upper level, Rhoden reported. On arrival firefighters found fire showing through the roof. Crews made rapid entry and quickly put the fire out, he said. Definitive cause of the fire is undetermined.

Updated A family of eight escaped from a late-night fire Saturday at their home in the 3700 block of Brock Road in Duluth. The fire was reported about 10:45 p.m., and Gwinnett County Fire/Emergency Services arrived a few minutes later, according to Lt. Eric Eberly. It took several hours to put out the fire, he said. Fire crews arrived to find a split-level residential structure with heavy fire and smoke showing from the carport and roof areas, Eberly reported. Firefighters immediately entered the home to battle the blaze, but were forced back out due to the intensity of the fire. They then adopted a defensive mode of operations. A Saturday night fire caused extensive damage to a home at 3966 North Berkeley Lake Road. The large approximately 5,000-square-foot home is a total loss, Gwinnett Fire/Emergency Serivces Lt. Eric Eberly reported. One adult and three children were displaced by the fire, he said, but were not injured. The fire was reported at 9:13 p.m. Fire crews found heavy smoke and flames showing from the roof of the home upon arrival about 9:21 p.m., Eberly said.
