Visitors tour 'secret gardens' in historic downtown Duluth. Tour proceeds benefit the Duluth Historical Society.
Driving by the historic homes on West Lawrenceville Street in Duluth, passers-by would never know there are lush gardens tucked behind them. On Saturday (May 18) the homeowners opened their gardens for the inaugural Secret Garden Tour to benefit the Duluth Historical Society. Seven gardens on West Lawrenceville Street and two others nearby were featured on the walking tour. Homeowners had been working diligently for the past few weeks to get ready for the tour by pulling weeds, spreading mulch, and adding plants. Beth Moody describes her yard as "a friendship garden." The Duluth Historical Society’s Secret Garden Tour will feature nine gardens in historic Duluth. The gardens will be open for visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18. The locations of the gardens on the tour are a secret. To get a map, and catch the shuttle, start the tour at the Strickland House, 2956 Buford Hwy. Parking is free. Tickets are $25 each, which includes the shuttle. Garden art and drawing tickets will be on sale throughout the tour. Gardening experts will be available to answer questions. Atlanta actor "Barefoot" Bill Pacer will appear as Benjamin Franklin and present a program on his life, his politics and his inventions at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at the Duluth History Museum. “Most people forget Franklin was an inventor, however, everyone knows he was influential in helping to shape our founding documents,” said Judy Wilson, president of the Duluth Historical Society, in a press release announcing March events at the museum. “Come and enjoy a look back. Santa’s Elves will be hosting a “Top Your Own Pancake” Breakfast Saturday, Dec. 8, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Duluth History Museum. A selection of pancake toppings including sprinkles, flavored chips, syrups, and whipped cream will be available. The menu also includes a Christmas Story Time and a sing-along. Cost of the breakfast is $5 per person ($3 for veterans and civil servants.) Children can write letters to Santa or create Christmas cards to drop into a special North Pole mailbox. Pets and their people spend a fun-filled day at Chattapoochee Pet Fest in Duluth.
Rogers Bridge Park in Duluth was overrun with pets and their people Sunday (Oct. 7) for the Chattapoochee Pet Fest. Chattapoochee Dog Park was busy as dogs exercised their owners in fenced area for large and small canines. The adjacent field was overflowing with 46 booths offering pet food samples, promoting pet services and displaying pet clothing and accessories for sale. People food was also available. Chattapoochee Dog Park’s Mayor “Shiner” welcomed visitors, and real Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris joined in the fun activities at the day-long festival presented by the Duluth Historical Society. Update: The "Kitten Adoption" has been moved to Planned Pethood, just down the road at 2860 Buford Hwy. due to the rain. Soft, cuddly kittens are up for adoption at the Historic Strickland House in Duluth. Kittens are abundant this time of year, and the Duluth Historical Society is helping to find them loving homes. The Duluth Historical Society and the Companion Animal Rescue League (C.A.R.L.) are co-sponsoring a "Kitten Adoption" event on the grounds of the Strickland House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 13. There will be about 35 to 40 kittens available for adoption. All of them have been spayed, neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and tested for feline leukemia and AIDs. The Duluth History Museum has expanded its collection of military uniforms to 11 and added photographs, plaques and other memorabilia. The artifacts range from World War I to modern conflicts. The uniforms on display belonged to Duluth residents or their family members, according to Judy Wilson, president of the Duluth Historical Society. “Each uniform has a name and picture to go with it, so you can visualize them while they so proudly served our country.” Chattahoochee American Legion Post 251 in Duluth has loaned photographs and plaques to the exhibit. “Come and be inspired and proud of our military men and women,” Wilson said. Exhibits celebrating “100 Years of Girl Scouting in Georgia” open today (Feb. 3) at the Duluth History Museum and Duluth City Hall. Duluth Cadette Troop 1941 invites everyone to stop by the museum in the Historic Strickland House to see the exhibit. Visitors will learn about the history of Girl Scouting and view artifacts such as original handbooks and uniforms on loan from the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta Archives. The museum is operated by the Duluth Historical Society. The exhibit at Duluth City Hall features information on current Girl Scout troops and the services they perform in the community.
