Click on the sample ballots for Duluth voters so you're ready when you enter the voting booth. A controversial one-cent sales tax has been proposed to fund 157 transportation projects in 10 metro Atlanta counties including Gwinnett. Voters will vote "yes" or "no" for TSPLOST in a referendum in the Primary. The issue appears on both Democratic and Republican ballots. If approved, the sales tax would go into effect Jan. 1. Duluth City Hall is not an early voting site. Click on link in article for locations.

Duluth residents wishing to vote in advance in the July 31 Primary will have to do so Friday, July 27. Duluth City Hall is not a location for early voting. Residents may vote early at the Gwinnett County Voter Registrations and Elections Office at 455 Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville. For more information and locations for early voting click here. There will be no voting anywhere in Gwinnett on Monday. Voting on Tuesday, July 31, will be at at Gwinnett County precincts. Untie Atlanta Airing New Ads; Reagan Featured in One

Alternatives of higher gas taxes and tolls the focus of additional ads supporting TSPLOST referendum.

Untie Atlanta has started airing three new TV ads as the July 31 Primary approaches. The ads remind voters that alternatives to passing the TSPLOST referendum include higher gas taxes and tolls. Voters in 10 metro Atlanta counties including Gwinnett will vote on the one-cent sales tax to fund a list of transportation improvements developed wth citizen input. Poll: Georgians Support VLT Gambling to Fund HOPE

Fifty-six percent of Georgians favor video lottery terminals in a casino-style environment to fund education, according to a recent 11Alive poll.

A recent poll by 11Alive found that a majority of Georgians support video lottery terminals in a casino-style environment to help fund the HOPE scholarship and pre-kindergarten. Out of the 1,292 registered Georgia voters polled, 56 percent said they favored the use of VLTs. Widespread support was found across all ages, genders and political parties, including conservatives and Republican voters. Thirty-four percent said they opposed it, and 11 percent were unsure. YES, I do support it! I have two young children and would love to see the HOPE scholarship grow! If you don't agree with gambling, then don't enter the facility. From what I read, it seems that it would provide many jobs and increased revenue for the city in addition to aiding the HOPE program.   more ›

Big Business Backing TSPLOST Financially

Records show such corporate giants as Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines have donated to the group supporting the transportation referendum.

The transportation referendum that is on the Gwinnett ballot for July 31 has drawn millions of dollars in support from major Atlanta-based corporations, according to media reports. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported that the Citizens for Transportation Mobility has raised $6.5 million from spring 2011 through July 16, 2012. Records show that the Transportation Leadership Coalition, which is fighting the referendum, raised $14,418, the AJC reported. Duluth Officials Invite Brooks to Campaign Event

City issues possible quorum notice about ice cream social at Chocolate Perks July 24 for Gwinnett Commission candidate Jace Brooks.

Updated 2:48 p.m. Duluth city officials have notified the public that the mayor and council members may attend an upcoming campaign event for Gwinnett County Commission District 1 candidate Jace Brooks of Suwanee. Duluth this week sent out a public notice that "there may be a quorum of the Duluth Mayor and Council" at an ice cream social for Brooks, who is opposing Laurie McClain for the post. The event is scheduled at Chocolate Perks, 3160 Main St., in Duluth on Tuesday, July 24, 5:30-7 p.m. The notice said that no official council action will be taken. Gwinnett Chamber Hosting Transportation Forum

State transportation leaders, metro Atlanta business leaders to participate in forum in Duluth.

As the July 31 vote on TSPLOST nears, the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce is hosting a State of Transportation Forum on mobility needs from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 19, at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth. The forum will feature an update on Georgia’s mobility needs from state transportation officials followed by a presentation by business leaders on the impact of mobility their bottom-line, according to a press release issued by the chamber. Patch Survey of GOP Leaders Shows Widespread Opposition to TSPLOST

Higher taxes and lack of trust are two reasons most Republican respondents are against the transportation referendum.

Georgia Republican leaders responding to a Patch survey overwhelmingly oppose TSPLOST in their regions and believe it will fail. Patch sent surveys to about 135 Republican Party activists, candidates and officeholders last week asking their opinions about the referendum to raise sales taxes by a penny to fund road and transit projects. Just over 60 responded. The referendum to create a transportation special purpose local option sales tax, or TSPLOST, is split into 12 regional districts across Georgia, and the referendum could pass in one region and fail in others.
