Boudreaux's Café Acadiana Opening

Duluth's newest dining attraction traces its roots back to the Boudreaux’s Cajun Seafood Market & Cafe downtown.

Duluth’s dining choices are expanding with the new Boudreaux’s Café Acadiana opening Thursday (Feb. 16).  Paul Many of Boudreaux's Cajun Seafood Market in Duluth is helping long-time friend Mark Beidel open the Creole-centered restaurant. Café Acadiana is taking over vacant restaurant space in the Duluth Station shopping center at Buford Highway and Old Peachtree Road. Many said he is excited to see his south Louisiana heritage advance on such a large scale. “I’m the defender of my culture, promoter of the legacy my family left to me,” Many said. “My grandmother is who the business is named after.” In addition to the all-you-can-eat selections and other popular menu options for lunch and dinner, a beignet and French press coffee service is…

A pleasant restaurant serving Japanese and Korean favorites.

Bites Nearby: Udipi Cafe

A snazzy vegetarian restaurant that would be at home in Midtown.

This week's Bites Nearby looks at a vegetarian restaurant featuring flavors from North and South India. Udipi Cafe -- Udipi's meat-free menu has garnered numerous accolades, including making Gayot's Top 10 Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Atlanta in 2012. The original Udipi Cafe opened in Decatur in 1998. That location is now closed, but reputedly the Duluth location is nicer anyway. Many Indians are vegetarian for religious reasons, so their cuisine features a rich spectrum of meat-free dishes. Some examples from Udipi's menu include curries, a variety of dosai dishes (crepe-like pancakes of lentil and rice stuffed with spicy vegetable fillings), rice dishes, and traditional appetizers. There are also a few Indo-Chinese offerings. Round …

Bites Nearby: Sweetwater Bar and Grill

A gem in the Duluth nightlife scene featuring comfort food and an adjacent live music venue.

This week's Bites Nearby highlights a local bar, perhaps best-known as a live music venue. Sweetwater Bar and Grill -- Since it's inception in 1996, the Sweetwater Bar and Grill has become something of a Duluth institution. It has a relaxed atmosphere, reasonable prices, and weekly poker, darts, and billiards tournaments. You don't have to be part of some cultural movement to enjoy this bar, and that has given rise to its popularity amongst a diverse clientele. Basically, it's a great neighborhood bar. The adjoining music venue, Sweetwater LIVE, was opened in 2002. Featuring its own separate bar and highlighting up-and-coming rock musicians, Sweetwater LIVE has won the Best OTP Music Club award from Creative Loafing for two years running. …

Bites Nearby: Ming's BBQ

Another fine addition to the Asian cuisine mecca that is Duluth.

This week on Bites Nearby, we'll examine an authentic Chinese restaurant that has been a decades-long tradition for many Atlantans. Ming's BBQ -- After long success at their original Doraville location, Ming's opened a new outpost on Pleasant Hill Road. The first Ming's was known for it's small and so-so interior. The new location is about fives times the size and much nicer, with HDTVs and attractive wood paneling. The extensive menu is mostly the same. The focus is on Cantonese cuisine and especially Hong Kong BBQ. Ming's is perhaps best known for their legendary honey-barbecue pork and their Peking duck. They feature a variety of noodle dishes, congee, rice plates, and stir-fries. They've also added a section to their menu called Cha …

Bites Nearby: Shami Kabab

A Duluth restaurant offering a dining experience unique in all of Atlanta.

This weeks Bites Nearby highlights what is claimed to be the only Afghan restaurant in all of Georgia, located right here in Duluth. Shami Kabab Afghan Restaurant -- Most of us know Afghanistan best as the subject of grim newspaper headlines. Shami Kabab's owner Kamila Abdul Nabi was born in Kabul and fled from the political unrest of her country more than a decade ago. She brought with her a culinary tradition born from the great melting pot of ancient cultures around the Silk Road trading routes. Afghan food has influences from India and the Orient as well as flavors from its neighbors around the Mediterranean. The best known and most distinctive Afghan dish to Americans is aushuk, a type of dumpling stuffed with leeks and scallions with…

Bites Nearby: Barnacles

A bar, nightclub and seafood restaurant with a 20-year history.

This week's Bites Nearby focuses on a Duluth fixture established in 1991. Barnacles -- Barnacles is quite a few things, but it is a bar and nightclub, first and foremost. You must be at least 18 to enter, and 21 to enter after 9pm. There is a $5 cover to enter after 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Smoking is permitted indoors, and a live DJ spins five nights a week. The other two nights are dedicated to team trivia and karaoke. That being said, Barnacles features a full menu and a kitchen that is open until the wee hours of the morning. Most of the menu offerings are fairly typical bar food like chicken wings and burgers, but they also serve a lot of tasty seafood and steaks. They've got items like oysters on the half-shell (served raw …

Bites Nearby: Luciano's Ristorante Italiano

A popular local Italian restaurant with an upscale atmosphere and opera music.

This week's Bites Nearby highlights a great local alternative to the big chain Italian spots. Luciano's Ristorante Italiano -- Luciano's is yet another of Gwinnett's diamonds in the rough. Like so many others, it lies in an unremarkable strip mall. Once you take a step inside and soak in the classy but welcoming interior and omnipresent operatic music, you'll realize you are actually in quite a nice restaurant. Luciano's now has two locations in Gwinnett and is opening another in Charlotte, NC, offering a testament to the appeal of Executive Chef John Soilis' menu. The menu focuses on dishes from Naples and Northern Italy that are fairly comfortable and familiar to Americans. The menu has popular choices like lasagna, eggplant parmagiana, …
