Duluth, Gwinnett County Offices Closed Jan. 21

Gocernment offices to observe Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday.

City of Duluth Duluth and Gwinnett County offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 21, to observe the holiday honoring Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Duluth City Hall offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22. Trash collection for Duluth residents will be Wednesday as usual. Gwinnett County government offices will resume regular operating hours Jan. 22. A Magistrate Court will be available in the Gwinnett County Detention Center Monday. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not a trash and recycling holiday for solid waste providers in unincorporated Gwinnett County, so trash and recycling collections are scheduled as normal. Pen & Ink Drawing of Duluth City Hall Donated

Artist Brenda D. Ehly, left, presented a detailed pen and ink drawing of Duluth City Hall at the city council’s Dec. 10 meeting. The drawing, which will hang in Duluth City Hall, was framed by Gwinnett Gallery. Council member Marsha Bomar, right, facilitated the donation. Ehly draws as a hobby. Her gift joins the city's art collection.

Duluth City Hall Decked Out in Dolls

New collection of international dolls joins Presidential First Ladies in Inaugural Ball gowns in display cases in the lobby.

Visitors to Duluth City Hall during the Christmas holidays and afterwards can admire a collection of nearly 100 dolls from all over the world collected by Calvin and Kate Parsons on their travels. Calvin and Kate Parsons, pioneer retailers who opened Parsons in Duluth in 1925, traveled extensively in their later years with Kate collecting the dolls every place they visited in the 1960s and 1970s. The dolls mostly come from countries in Europe, North America, Asia, and South America. There are also a few animals in the collection, such as kangaroos and sheep from Australia and a llama from Peru. The dolls have been cared for in recent years by their three daughters Ann Parsons Odum, Kathryn Parsons Willis and Margaret Parsons Andrews. …

Duluth City Hall Open on Presidents Day Monday

Non-essential Gwinnett County offices to be closed Monday, resume regular working hours Tuesday.

  Duluth City Hall and other city government offices will be open on Presidents Day Monday, Feb. 20. Presidents Day is not among Duluth’s official holidays. Non-essential Gwinnett County government offices will be closed for Presidents Day. All county offices will resume regular working hours on Tuesday, Feb. 21. A Magistrate Court judge is available 24 hours a day at the Gwinnett County Detention Center, including holidays. Trash pickup in the county will not be affected.

Christmas Day Snowfall Photograph Given to City

Photograph taken of Duluth Town Green and Duluth City Hall donated by Duluth Patch, Wallace Reid Portraiture and Gwinnett Gallery.

Duluth Patch Editor Faye Edmundson, Wallace Reid of Wallace Reid Portraiture, and Bill Crissey of Gwinnett Gallery presented a framed copy to the city of a photograph taken by Edmundson of the 2010 Christmas Day snowfall on the Duluth Town Green and Duluth City Hall. Reid enhanced the photography with a Currier & Ives treatment, and Gwinnett Gallery framed it. The photograph, which was presented to the city at the Jan. 9, 2012, Duluth City Council meeting, will hang in the lobby of Duluth City Hall. A small plaque will acknowledge the donation. Duluth, Gwinnett Offices Closed Monday, Sept. 5

Offices to open for regular business hours Tuesday after observing Labor Day holiday.

  Duluth City Hall will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday Monday, Sept. 5. City offices will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday,  Sept. 6. Gwinnett County offices will also be closed Monday with the exception of essential services and will reopen Tuesday.  Garbage haulers serving Gwinnett County will follow a normal trash schedule on Labor Day.  Wednesday’s garbage pick-up in the city of Duluth will occur as usual.

The Quake: Did You Feel It?

Tellus Center in Cartersville reports feeling Virginia-based quake. Tremor also felt at Duluth City Hall.

The earthquake Tuesday that forced evacuation of the White House and the Pentagon was felt in the Atlanta area. The Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville issued a statement saying that the Magnitude 5.9 earthquake was felt in Bartow County. "The earthquake was recorded on the Tellus Seismograph, and I have attached a copy of the seismogram. The earthquake occurred at precisely 1:51 PM and the seismic waves arrived at Tellus in just under two minutes," read the statement from Julian C. Gray, museum curator. There have been other reports of people feeling the quake in the Atlanta area.
