Dreamland BBQ Fire Determined to be Accidental

The popular Peachtree Corners restaurant's owner says it will be rebuilt and back in operation in a few months.

The fire that heavily damaged Dreamland BBQ in nearby Peachtree Corners Jan. 16 was accidental, according to Gwinnett County fire investigators. "The fire was determined to be caused by a neon sign transformer located in the attic space," said Lt. Colin Rhoden, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire Department. Rhoden said the sign was not being used by Dreamland and had been left there by the previous tenants. "It caused an electrical arcing condition in the attic which resulted in the ignition," explained Rhoden. Because the cause of the fire was deemed accidental, there will be no further investigation, he said. "The building is a total loss," said Rhoden. Fire Damages Dreamland BBQ in Peachtree Corners

The popular Peachtree Corners eatery was heavily damaged by fire around 5:30 p.m. A quick-thinking restaurant manager evacuated customers and employees when he saw smoke in the back of the building.

Dreamland BBQ, the popular restaurant located on the corner of Peachtree Parkway and Peachtree Corners Circle, caught fire Wednesday (Jan. 16) afternoon. The fire appears to have caused extensive damage. Gwinnett firefighters were called around 5:20 p.m. and had the fire under control shortly after 6 p.m., said Lt. Colin Rhoden, public information officer for the fire department. "There were several patrons in the restaurant at the time, and the manager was able to get them and the employees out of the restaurant," said Rhoden. Rhoden said the restaurant manager saw smoke in the back of the restaurant and immediately called 911 .
