Improvements to winding Davenport Road that include sidewalks for pedestrian safety earned the City of Duluth a Golden Shoe Award from PEDS. The city was awarded the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Award for connecting Davenport Road residents to restaurants and shopping and separating them from traffic hazards. PEDS is an advocacy organization for making the metro Atlanta area pedestrian friendly. Steve Roberts of Bron Cleveland, which provided engineering and project manager services to the city on the Davenport Road project, presented the award to the city at the Monday (Nov. 14) Duluth City Council meeting. Officials and neighborhood residents applauded improvements to a section of Davenport Road off Buford Highway and snipped a purple ribbon stretched across the road Thursday (Sept. 1) afternoon. The ceremony celebrated completion of improvements that included new five-foot sidewalks on both sides of the road, curb and gutter, drainage, resurfacing, and widening to accommodate two full-lane widths. Several residents walked over to the ribbon-cutting ceremony from their homes on the new sidewalks, which increase pedestrian mobility and safety in the neighborhood. The City of Duluth is inviting the Davenport Road neighborhood and other citizens to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark completion of road improvements and installation of sidewalks at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1. The Davenport Road project has dramatically improved the appearance of the neighborhood, and the sidewalks have increased pedestrian safety and accessibility to downtown Duluth. Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris will officiate at the ceremony, and State Transportation Board Member Rudy Bowen will deliver remarks. The ceremony will take place along the newly improved road located off Buford Highway. Installation of sidewalks and other improvements along Davenport Road from Buford Highway to just past Bromley Rowe is nearly complete ahead of schedule. Workmen were laying sod on lawns of houses along the road last week. The improvements include new five-foot sidewalks on both sides of the street, curb and gutter, drainage, repaving, and road widening to accommodate two full-lane widths, curbs and gutters. The approximate length of the project is 2,400 linear feet. The contractor SD&C Inc. began work April 4 with completion scheduled for October.
