Duluth, Gwinnett County Offices Closed Nov. 22, 23

City and county offices will reopen for business on Monday, Nov. 26, after Thanksgiving holiday.

If you have business to conduct with the City of Duluth or Gwinnett County, you’d better hurry. Duluth City Hall will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23, for the Thanksgiving holiday. All city offices will reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 26. Most Gwinnett County government offices will be closed in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23. A Magistrate Court judge will be available at the Gwinnett County Detention Center. County offices will reopen for normal business hours on Monday, Nov. 26. Thanksgiving Day is a trash and recycling holiday in the county. Pickups scheduled on that day will be rescheduled for Friday, and Friday pickups will be rescheduled for Saturday. Only Thursday …

Trees Being Removed near Downtown Duluth

Contractors removing trees at Main Street near intersection of Rogers Bridge Road for safety reasons.

Contractors will be working on Main Street in Duluth removing trees for safety reasons near the intersection of Rogers Bridge Road starting Monday, Nov. 19, the city announced. Use an alternate route to avoid traffic delays. Work should be completed by Wednesday, Nov. 21. For more information, contact the Department of Public Works at 770-476-2454.

New Rules for Veterans Markers

Duluth implements new requirements and a $100 fee to obtain new veterans markers.

To observe Veterans Day and Memorial Day, the streets in Duluth are traditionally lined with more than 700 markers and flags representing deceased veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces with a Duluth connection. The flags and markers are on display a week before and after the holidays. This year Veterans Day fell on Sunday, Nov. 11, and is being officially observed Monday, Nov. 12. Due to road construction some of the markers normally placed on Pleasant Hill Road have been relocated to Buford Highway. The markers consist of a white cross bearing the name of the veteran and the war or conflict in which the veteran served, if applicable. The markers are topped with American flags. Duluth, Gwinnett County Offices Closed Monday

All city and county offices to reopen Tuesday after Labor Day holiday.

If you have business with Gwinnett County or the City of Duluth, get it taken care of Friday or it will have to wait until Tuesday. Duluth city offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 3, for the Labor Day holiday. The offices will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4. All Gwinnett County offices, with the exception of those operations required for the comfort and safety of residents, will be closed Monday, Sept. 3, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Regular working hours for all county offices will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 4. A Magistrate Court judge will be available at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

Duluth Struts Its Stuff on TV

11Alive Channel 11 broadcasts its Morning Show live from the Duluth Town Green.

TV cameras, lights, on-air personalities, and Duluth boosters flooded the Duluth Town Green before dawn Friday (June 15) for a live broadcast of the 11Alive Morning Show. Practically the entire cast of New Dawn Theater’s “The Sleeping Beauty” arrived in full costumes and posed next to the 11Alive W.I.Z-O-Meter as a backdrop for  Meteorologist Chesley McNeil’s weather reports. Key members of the Duluth Fall Festival Committee donned matching T-shirts to promote the 30th annual festival the last weekend in October. The anniversary will be celebrated with a party on the green June 30. Chief Duluth Municipal Court Judge Honored

Gwinnett Bar presents Liberty Bell Award to Judge Charles L. Barrett III at Law Day Banquet.

The Gwinnett County Bar Association recently honored Duluth Chief Municipal Court Judge Charles L. Barrett III with the prestigious Liberty Bell Award. The award was presented April 27 as part of the annual Law Day May 1 observance. Judge Barrett received the award during the Gwinnett County Bar Association’s Law Day Banquet at the Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth. The Liberty Bell Award honors outstanding public service and community involvement.  “Judge Barrett has always conducted his courtroom with fairness, respect, and dignity, and has been a great mentor for me in both the courtroom and the community,” said fellow Duluth Judge Kathy Schrader. Intersection Not As Dangerous Now With Signal

Traffic signal Installed at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Chattahoochee Drive where numerous vehicular crashes and several fatalities have occurred.

A traffic signal has been installed at the intersection of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Chattahoochee Drive through cooperation between Gwinnett County and the City of Duluth. The estimated $100,000 cost of the new traffic light is being shared 50/50 by the city and county. The Duluth City Council approved entering into an intergovernmental agreement with the county to share the cost in February. Gwinnett County provided the design for the signalized intersection. Numerous vehicular crashes and several traffic fatalities have been reported at the dangerous intersection. The city had approached the county about the need for a light at this location, and the county agreed it was warranted. The county will coordinate the timing of the …

A Special Day for Duluth's Dogs

Dogs and their owners turn out for grand opening of Chattapoochee Dog Park, naming of Top Dog.

Dogs, dogs, dogs everywhere! Chattapoochee Dog Park regulars and first-timers turned out with their owners for the grand opening of Duluth’s first dog park Saturday. “It’s [going to be] a day filled with fun activities,” said Duluth Parks and Recreation Department Director Kathy Marelle in welcoming everyone to the April 28 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the three-acre park at Rogers Bridge Park. “It’s all for the dogs!” Marelle thanked citizens for voting for the SPLOST, which made the park possible. Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds were used to build it. Wanda Bennewitz, chairman of the Duluth Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and Judy Wilson, president of the Duluth Historical Society, also participated in the special day. …
