New Dawn Theater Must Move

Letter from board informs friends and patrons that the City of Duluth has other plans for the space the theater occupies. The theater leases space from the city.

New Dawn Theater in Duluth is looking for a place to relocate. According to a letter from the theater’s board to friends and supporters, the theater is planning to leave its location on Main Street in downtown Duluth no later than early January 2014 because the City of Duluth has other plans for the space it occupies. The city is involved in a revitalization effort with an initial focus on creating a downtown dining and nightlife district in the Old City Hall Block, now called The Block, where the theater is located. The theater leases the space at a discounted rate on a month-to-month basis from the city, which owns the block. A copy of the later was emailed Monday (April 8) to Duluth Patch by New Dawn Theater President/Artistic Director …

I think the city wants that block to be dead. Then they can push to have it torn down since it is not a sustainable area in its current state. Then several of the people in the city can push their own agendas to get a boutique hotel and other unwanted junk in there. It is a conflict of interest for the city to own and lease that property while controlling what goes in there. Also, if these lease …   more ›

Duluth Compiles 2014 SPLOST List

The list indicates how the city would use one-cent sales tax funds if a referendum is called by Gwinnett County to extend SPLOST and passed by voters.

The extension of Davenport Road across Buford Highway tops the list of projects being considered by Duluth for 2014 SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) funds. The Duluth City Council and city staff have been compiling a list and prioritizing the projects in case the Gwinnett County Commission calls for a referendum in November 2013 to continue the one-cent sales tax. Gwinnett voters have approved a series of SPLOST referendums since the mid-1980s. The additional one-cent sales tax is the main source of funds for capital improvements in Duluth. The list is compiled so citizens would know how the sales tax monies would be spent prior to voting. Other projects on Duluth’s list include infrastructure upgrades to “The Block” to …

Just how much will that cost the taxpayer? take a look at the cost to maintain all that area, and for what just to say we now have a roundabout? Lets get real with our tax money and spend it on projects we really need, not junk.   more ›

Duluth Aspires to be a 'Cool City'

Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris' State of the City Address focuses on attracting young professionals and others to the city. Local businesses also spotlighted.

Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris focused on efforts by the city to attract young professionals and others to live and visit the city during her 2013 State of the City Address Tuesday (Jan. 22). An estimated 250 business and civic leaders gathered at the Gwinnett Center to hear her informative talk. Duluth already offers many amenities that appeal to young professionals, Harris said, and will be adding more as the city proceeds with plans to redevelop historic Downtown Duluth into a dining and entertainment district. Plans also include providing affordable high-density places to live downtown, she said. Of particular interest, the mayor said, are “millennials,” individuals born between 1982 and 2002. I would love to see Duluth become a cool city and there are lots of great things going on in the town square, but for us, the schools were a problem and the area around Gwinnett place is a problem. We sold our home in our Title 1 district at a loss and moved to South Forsyth last year. I love the international flair Duluth has, but I find that many outsiders see Duluth as crime ridden or ghetto …   more ›
