Owners of 45 South Cafe in Norcross, who bought Chocolate Perks last August, change the name of Duluth business.
Chocolate Perks has a new name. 45 on Main, a café and coffee house, is celebrating its grand opening at Chocolate Perks’ former location on Main Street in Duluth. Keith and Jeanette Shewbert, who own 45 South Cafe in downtown Norcross, also own 45 on Main. They bought Chocolate Perks from founding owner Marsha Bomar and assumed ownership Aug 1. A new menu implements several new sandwiches and salads at 45 on Main. The menu still includes breakfast items. Both cafes serve beer and wine. Wine tastings are continuing at both locations. Now that Chocolate Perks in downtown Duluth has renewed its beer and wine license, monthly wine tastings are resuming Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. Chocolate Perks is also extending its hours until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Founding owner Marsha Bomar did not renew the beer and wine license in anticipation of selling the cafe/coffee shop. Marsha Bomar announces sale of Chocolate Perks in Duluth to owners of 45 South in Norcross.
Chocolate Perks, the café and coffee shop on Main Street in downtown Duluth, has been purchased by Keith and Jeanette Shewbert, who own 45 South in downtown Norcross. The Shewberts assumed ownership of Chocolate Perks, Aug 1. Marsha Bomar, a member of the Duluth City Council, announced she had sold the café, which she opened across from City Hall in February 2009, at a press conference early Friday (Aug. 3) at Chocolate Perks. Keith Shewbert, who bought 45 South, when it was called Northern Star, on Aug. 1 five years ago is a former Norcross City Council member. Duluth-based photographer Mary Buck, owner of Lightscapes Photography, will present an exhibit of art photography by herself and six former students during June at Chocolate Perks. The Studio 2.8 exhibit opens Friday, June 1, with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. When the recession hit in 2009, Buck found a new market in teaching adults all over the Atlanta area how to use their Digital SLR cameras. Little did she know how much her program would grow. In 2011 Buck enrolled more than 400 students in her photography classes. Her Studio 2.8 Photography Learning Center now offers not only beginner level classes but more advanced classes in Adobe Photoshop® and lighting. David Harris of Blackstock Vineyards and Winery in the North Georgia Mountains brings his wines to Duluth.
David Harris, owner and winegrower at Blackstock Vineyards and Winery in Dahlonega, led a tasting of his wines recently for an enthusiastic group at Chocolate Perks in Duluth. Chocolate Perks provided pimento cheese bites with bacon and jalapenos, sweet-sauced barbecue pork bruschetta with caramelized onions, and kickin’chili for Harris to pair with his wines including a Viognier, Sangiovese Rosé, and Rocking Chair Red. Chocolate Perks owner Marsha Bomar offered strawberry shortcake and Black Magic truffles to pair with Blackstock’s highly rated dessert wine Touriga Dulce. Woman considering engineering as a career will be inspired by “Petticoats and Slide Rules,” a historical exhibit that opened Jan. 9 at the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center (GEHC). The exhibit explores the evolving role of women in engineering and relates the story of the Society of Women Engineers, the first American organization dedicated to promoting women in engineering and science. “The GEHC is very excited to host this unique exhibition,” said Jason West, GEHC director of development, in announcing the exhibit. “One of the GEHC’s goals is to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related careers and opportunities for young people. Gather up the children, put on their swimsuits, pile in the car and drive over to the Duluth Town Green for a Summer Kickoff Picnic from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 26. Miss Gail and The Jumpin’ Jam Band will entertain with a 45-minute interactive show starting at 6:15 p.m. Children can cool off by playing in the city fountain. There will also be face painting, balloons, a bouncy house and a cutest kid swimsuit contest. Food will be available from Chocolate Perks or may be ordered ahead. Proceeds benefit Rainbow Village, a transitional housing program for homeless families and children based in Duluth.

This is wonderful news for Duluth. Keith and Jeanette know how to make a coffee shop a welcoming place--a place to chat, have coffee, or a meal. And I am sure the fare will improve here, too.
