Duluth Parks and Recreation Director Kathy Marelle presented a “Best of Gwinnett” plaque to Mayor Nancy Harris at the Jan. 14 Duluth City Council meeting for the Chattapoochee Dog Park. The dog park was recognized in the 2012 “Best of Gwinnett” as the best dog park in the county. "Shiner," the mayor of Chattapoochee Dog Park, also accepted the award. The dog park won in the Wildcard Division on the basis of write-in votes. The Chattapoochee Dog Park, located at the entrance to Rogers Bridge Park, was built by the city with SPLOST funds. It opened in 2012. The three-acre park includes fenced exercise areas for large and small dogs, interactive play fountains, dog agility equipment, and benches.

Dogs and their owners turn out for grand opening of Chattapoochee Dog Park, naming of Top Dog.
Dogs, dogs, dogs everywhere! Chattapoochee Dog Park regulars and first-timers turned out with their owners for the grand opening of Duluth’s first dog park Saturday. “It’s [going to be] a day filled with fun activities,” said Duluth Parks and Recreation Department Director Kathy Marelle in welcoming everyone to the April 28 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the three-acre park at Rogers Bridge Park. “It’s all for the dogs!” Marelle thanked citizens for voting for the SPLOST, which made the park possible. Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds were used to build it. Wanda Bennewitz, chairman of the Duluth Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and Judy Wilson, president of the Duluth Historical Society, also participated in the special day. …

Festivities start at 10 a.m. with ribbon-cutting and naming of Duluth's Top Dog, who will serve as mayor of Chattapoochee Dog Park.
Dogs and their owners are invited to join the Duluth Parks and Recreation Department in celebrating the grand opening of Chattapoochee Dog Park Saturday, April 28. The day will be filled with activities starting at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and naming of Duluth’s Top Dog, who will serve as mayor of the park. Mayor Nancy Harris will announce the mayor selected from 30 candidates entered in the contest. There also will be vendors featuring dog services and products and a free Kids Zone. The deadline for entering your dog in the Duluth Parks and Recreation Department's Top Dog contest is midnight Friday, April 13. The city's Top Dog will serve as Mayor of Chattapoochee Dog Park at the grand opening and ribbon-cutting Saturday, April 28. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Owners of canine mayoral candidates must live in Duluth or own a business in the city. A photograph must be submitted with an official entry form. The forms are available at the Bunten Road Park Activity Building, Duluth City Hall and the Duluth Historical Society. Duluth dogs and their owners are excited because the Chattapoochee Dog Park has reopened. The city’s first dog park opened for public use in January, but was closed Feb. 27 for sod repair and installation of benches and dog agility equipment. It reopened Sunday, April 1. The dog park features separate areas for small and large dogs and two interactive dog fountains. A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 28. Faux fur mingled with real fur as costumed mascots, dogs and their owners shared the Duluth Town Green at the Chattapoochie Pet Fest Sunday (Oct. 2). More than 40 vendor booths offered products and services for pets. The furry creatures appearing at the festival included Georgia 811’s Digger Dog; Clifford, the Big Red Dog, sponsored by American Family Insurance and Schoolastic; the Duluth Parks and Recreation Department's Dougie, the Dalmatian and friend; and Willy, the Duluth High School Wildcats mascot. “Dougie, the Dalmatian” dug with his paws and joined Duluth officials in breaking ground Thursday (Sept. 29) for the three-acre Chattapoochee Dog Park at Rogers Bridge Park. City officials used shovels to turn the earth. Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris welcomed two- and four-legged guests to the ceremony by remarking that the dogs had stolen her speech. “I had planned to go ‘woof, woof, woof…,” she said. The Duluth Town Green will be filled with pets, their owners and vendors who cater to them at the third annual Chattapoochie Pet Fest from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2. Well-behaved dogs and cats and their masters are welcome at the pet- and family-friendly event. Sponsored by the Duluth Historical Society, proceeds will benefit the Strickland House, home of the original Gwinnett Humane Society and its founder Alice Ziegler, granddaughter of Alice Strickland, mayor of Duluth in 1923 and the first female mayor in Georgia.
