It’s that time of year when parents start wondering how to keep the kids active and entertained when school lets out. The Duluth Parks and Recreation Department offers reasonable half- and full-day weeklong Summer Day Camp experiences for children ages 4-12. The camps feature a balance of free play, crafts, sports, recreational activities, and field trips in a safe and supervised environment at Bunten Road Park. Day campers have access to both indoor and outdoor facilities at the park. Camp hours are either 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday or 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. More than 100 Zumba enthusiasts raised nearly $2,000 to fight heart disease in memory of Jeff Scott Cook in a Zumbathon at Bunten Road Park in Duluth. The check for $1,919 was presented to the American Heart Association May 3. Participants got a great workout while raising funds at the April 21 event. Zumba instructor Janice Davis Canty organized the Zumbathon because members of her classes wanted to do something to show their support for Cook’s family. His wife Marline Santiago-Cook is a student in Canty’s class. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Cook passed away from a massive heart attack on Jan. 8, 2012. Duluth will celebrate 23 years of a being a Tree City USA and honor the legacy of five local citizens by planting trees on Arbor Day, Friday, Feb. 17. Two cherry trees will be planted in a ceremony starting at 10 a.m. at Bunten Road Park, according to Duluth Parks & Recreation Department Director Kathy Marelle. The tree plantings will recognize Jeff Cook, Joyce Fox, Cody Moran, Wally Odum, and Archie Warren. As a Tree City, Duluth encourages conserving trees and planting trees to improve the environment for future generations. Arbor Day is celebrated the third Friday in February every year in Georgia.

Celebrate love and friendship at Duluth’s Fifty and Beyond Valentine’s Day Celebration at Bunten Road Park Saturday, Feb. 11. The Monte Carlo-themed event will begin at 4 p.m. with appetizers and music followed by a dinner buffet at 6:30 p.m. and dancing at 7 p.m. The cost for FAB Club members is 10, $15 for non-members.
