The public will get a chance to speak on the planned 2012 Gwinnett County budget on Tuesday at headquarters in Lawrenceville. Commissioners will hold the public hearingin the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville at 5:30 p.m. Commissioners also will hold a regular business meeting Tuesday at 2 p.m. The proposed budget is $1.3 billion for 2012, about 12.4 percent smaller than the current spending blueprint. This includes about $5 million in reserve funds, but county officials say they intend to make budget cuts during the year to prevent those funds from actually being used. The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners is scheduled to get a look at the county's proposed 2012 spending plan Tuesday. The county began budget review in September with a $30 million revenue shortfall, but news reports say that an almost-balanced budget will be presented. Also, commissioners Tuesday will consider approving a public refendum on Sunday alcohol sales in unincorporated areas of the county. Voters in several Gwinnett cities recently approved Sunday sales in their areas, but that only applies within city limits. The current county budget is about $1.3 billion (operating and capital). The Georgia Court of Appeals overturned indictment charges against former Gwinnett County Commissioner Kevin Kenerly Thursday. The court ruled that the special purpose grand jury that indicted Kenerly last October was not legally authorized to do so. Those charges included one count of bribery and two counts of failing to disclose a financial interest. The indictments claimed Kenerly failed to disclose a partnership with a developer who was seeking county rezoning of two properties at the time and was ultimately approved. Kenerly was also accused of accepting or agreeing to accept a total of $1 million in bribes for setting up agreements for the county commission to buy real estate. Gwinnett County's new Board of Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash pointed to restoring public trust and budget crisis as key issues.
Well over 500 business and community leaders filled the Gwinnett Center's Tommy Hughes Ballroom on Wednesday to hear the county's new Board of Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash offer her first State of the County Address. The annual event, which usually take place in January, was delayed until a special election this past March was held to decide on a new county chairman. Newly elected Nash replaced Charles Bannister, who resigned last fall in the midst of a grand jury probe over county land deals. Nash, a former county administrator, took over the top spot during a failing economy that has forced the county to look for every means to cut expenses and reduce spending. Charlotte Nash officially took the oath of office Monday afternoon.
A packed auditorium at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center cheered and applauded loudly as Charlotte Nash was officially sworn is as the new Chairman of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Monday afternoon. The Dacula native easily beat out three opponents in the March 15th Special Election. Nash garnered 56 percent of the votes. Nash will complete the unexpired term of former Chairman Charles Bannister.
