Despite the economy's slow growth, the population of the 10-county Atlanta region which includes Gwinnett County, has increased by some 37,200 people for the 12 months ending April 1, 2012 according to the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC). According to the ARC, it's the fourth consecutive year that the area's population growth has been slower when compared to the region's growth from 2000-2007. Despite the down-turn in population growth, "Gwinnett County led the region’s growth, adding 9,000 residents during the year. Fulton County added 7,900 and was followed in growth by DeKalb (6,300) and Cobb (5,900) counties. All 10 counties and the City of Atlanta experienced growth during the year. None saw an overall loss of population" according…

The transportation tax that would have raised sales taxes 1 percent over 10 years to fund $8.5billion in transportation projects failed in the July 31 primaries in all 10 metro Atlanta counties. The final tally was 248,319 (37%) against, and 415,526 (63%) for. The closer voters were to the city of Atlanta, the more they favored the tax, according to the above map provided by the Atlanta Regional Commission. In some counties, precincts near interstates appear to have more strongly supported the tax, commonly referred to as TSPLOST. In Cherokee County, no precinct climbed above 28 percent for, the map shows. The Atlanta District was one of nine Georgia regions to reject the tax; in the other three — the Central Savannah River District, the …

"I'm disappointed," Johnson told Norcross Patch. "I think it was a great opportunity for the region that was missed." For the Atlanta Regional District, 62.43 percent of voters were against the transportation sales tax, known as TSPLOST, while 37.57 percent voted in favor of it. After working on the TIA for two years, Johnson and the rest of the roundtable have spent countless hours in meetings, Q&A discussions and town hall gatherings to perfect the referendum and try to gain support for …

The Regional Roundtable stamped a list that will be on the 2012 ballot for one-penny sales tax.
A $6.1-billion list of transportation projects was adopted by the Atlanta Regional Roundtable Thursday, according to Jim Jaquish of the Atlanta Regional Commision. This completes the Roundtable’s work and also determines what will be on the July 31, 2012, ballot for a 10-year one-penny sales tax that could mean a historic change in Atlanta area transportation. The final report was posted on the Roundtable's website. The Roundtable, which was chaired by Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, has deliberated, drafted and re-drafted the list, trying to settle on a group of projects that will entice the whole region. Not everyone on the Duluth City Council agrees with proposals for the city's future redevelopment contained in the Living Centers Initiative 10-Year Update.

So the council directed Planning Director Glenn Coyne during a work session Monday (July 25) night to prepare an executive summary of the update. Council members also asked Coyne to incorporate their comments and changes in the actual update and to make it more general. The draft LCI update was prepared by Jacobs Engineering, a consulting firm hired by the city with input from two community meetings, and already has been forwarded to the Atlanta Regional Commission. Bleakly Advisory Group worked on the study in conjunction with Jacobs. The update “gives the city access to ARC resources, grants and …

Gwinnett residents will be able to comment on proposed transportation projects June 20.
Gwinnett County residents will have the opportunity to offer opinions regarding a regional transportation project list during a June 20 telephone town hall meeting. Members of the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable executive committee are currently in the process of whittling down a 445-item, $22.9 billion "unconstrained" list of suggested transportation projects into a "constrained" list that can be funded with the $8 billion in revenue a proposed one percent transportation sales tax is expected to generate for regional projects. Next July, voters will be asked to approve the penny sales tax to fund a specified list of regional transportation projects. The tax, if passed, would remain in effect for 10 years. The roundtable will …
