Roundabout Sculpture Design to be Kept a Secret

Guests at a reception to meet the artist and view the design saw a model of the sculpture. But the entire design won't be made public until the official unveiling at the end of the year.

A model of Milton artist/blacksmith Michael Dillon’s sculpture for the Duluth Roundabout was unveiled at a reception Tuesday (April 30) for citizens who attended to meet the artist and view the design. They’ll likely be the last to see it until the full-scale sculpture is installed and officially unveiled in a ceremony at the end of the year. The city is keeping the sculpture design a secret. But it plans to release images of its parts periodically to generate excitement. Citizens are invited to name the sculpture by emailing suggestions to Name.it@duluthga.net. Public Art Project Progressing

Duluth Gateway Art Project Committee plans to issue call Aug. 1 for artists to design art for center of Roundabout.

Several members of the Gateway Arts Project Committee will be making a presentation at the Duluth City Council’s July 23 work session on public art to be commissioned for the grass circle in the center of the new Roundabout that links McClure Bridge Road, Irvindale Road and West Lawrenceville Street. In an update to the council at its regular July 9 meeting Mayor Nancy Harris told the council the GAP Committee plans to issue a call for artists to design the Roundabout art at the major gateway to the city Aug. 1. Duluth to Form New Art Organization

City Council gives Mayor Nancy Harris go-ahead to proceed with creating the Duluth Public Art Commission.

The Duluth City Council has given the go-ahead to Mayor Nancy Harris to proceed with establishing a Duluth Public Art Commission (DPAC). Its first task after being formed will be to establish a procedure, develop guidelines, and commission a piece of public art to be created with funds being donated by AGCO, a global manufacturer of agricultural equipment. The corporate headquarters for the Fortune 500 company is located in Duluth. Harris broached forming a DPAC to the council at its Jan. 23 work session, and the council informally agreed with her idea. Councilman Billy Jones cautioned that the new commission needs to interact with elected officials like the city’s other advisory boards. New City Manager Tim Shearer will be working with …
