Wildcats Spring Football Game to be Played Friday

Boys play against each other at 7:30 p.m. Girls powderpuff football game at 5 p.m. precedes boys game.

Members of the Duluth High School Wildcats Team will play each other in the traditional spring game Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. at Cecil Morris Field. A girls powderpuff football game at 5 p.m. will precede the boys game. Junior and senior girls will play sophomore and freshman girls. Admission is $5.

Jordan Dooley Earns Medal at State Track Meet

Dooley placed 7th in the state in the Long Jump with a jump of 21' 2 1/2."

Several Duluth High School Wildcats Boys Track Team members participated in the state meet in Jefferson this past weekend. The 4 x 100-meter Relay Team consisting of Lavonta Cranford, Jordan Dooley, Terence Williams, and Evan Ubakanm qualified for state but didn't make it to finals.   However, Dooley placed 7th in the state in the Long Jump with a jump of 21' 2 1/2" and earned a medal.    Reported by Lee Hannah, Duluth High School Head Boys Track Coach.

Two Duluth High Girls Place at State Track Meet

Jazmyn Johnson was third in both the Long Jump and High Jump. Demichia Higgins placed fourth in the 100-meter Hurdles.

Two members of the Duluth High School Wildcats Girls Track Team finished the season by placing at the state meet this past weekend in Albany. Jazmyn Johnson waited until her final attempt to jump a career best of 17'4" in the Long Jump. She placed third overall in the state, but she wasn't finished yet. Jazmyn came back shortly to compete in the High Jump. She placed third again in this event with a jump of 5'4.”   Her teammate Demichia Higgins ran a career best of 14.81 to qualify in the 100-meter Hurdles for finals. She ran a 14.90 in the finals for fourth best in the state. Reported by Lee Hannah, Duluth High School Head Boys Track Coach.

Braves Pitcher Beachy May Rehab in Gwinnett Soon

Heyward continues his stint. The G-Braves return to Coolray on May 18.

When the Gwinnett Braves return to Coolray Field on May 18, yet another high-profile Atlanta Braves player is likely to join them. Pitcher Brandon Beachy, who is recovering from off-season arm surgery, could start the G-Braves' Sunday (May 19) game on a rehab assignment, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Beachy, 26, had so-called "Tommy John" elbow surgery in the off-season, and he could have several starts with Gwinnett before being activated again by Atlanta. He'll be familiar to Gwinnett fans -- Beachy pitched for the G-Braves in 2010 and 2011. Also, outfielder Jason Heyward continues his stint with Gwinnett, with no word yet on when he'll return to Atlanta. ~ Suwanee Patch

Get Court-Side Seats at BB&T Atlanta Open

Sports fans are invited to sign up for coveted ball persons positions.

If you love tennis and you're good at running quickly, then you may earn a chance at court-side seats at the upcoming BB&T Atlanta Open by being a ball person. Most likely, you won't be actually sitting a lot, but you'll still be in the thick of the tennis action. The BB&T Atlanta Open will host tryouts for ball persons Monday, May 20, and Wednesday, May 22, at the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA in Buckhead. Ball persons must be at least 13 years old by July 20, 2013, in order to try out. Proof of age is required. All applicants must be able to attend one of the tryouts to be considered. If selected, ball persons must be available for the entire tournament and qualifying, July 20-28, at Atlantic Station. The ball persons primary job will be …

How's Jason Heyward Doing With G-Braves?

The Atlanta outfielder began a rehab assignment Thursday at Coolray Field.

Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward was in the lineup Thursday, but the Gwinnett Braves' losing streak continued. Heyward began an injury rehab assignment with Gwinnett after undergoing an appendectomy in April. He went 0-for-5 Thursday as the designated hitter in a 14-9 loss to Pawtucket at Coolray Field. It was the 12th straight loss for Gwinnett, now 12-23. A season-high crowd of 8,878 fans was on hand. Heyward is expected to remain with Gwinnett through the weekend series at Scranton (Pa.), and then be re-evaluated. See also: ~ Suwanee Patch

Atlanta Braves' Heyward To Play in Gwinnett

The outfielder will begin a rehab stint Thursday morning at Coolray Field.

Goodbye Brian McCann, hello Jason Heyward. The Gwinnett Braves have announced that Heyward, a starting outfielder for several years with the Atlanta Braves, will begin an injury rehab stint at Coolray Field beginning Thursday (May 9). Heyward, 23, underwent an appendectomy in April and was placed on Atlanta's disabled list. He is hitting .121 (7-for-58) in 2013. For his career, he is hitting .256 with 61 home runs. He is expected to be the designated hitter and bat second in Thursday's morning game (10:35 a.m.) vs. Pawtucket. Heyward also is expected to travel to Scranton (Pa.) with the G-Braves for a weekend series, and then be re-evaluated, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Georgia High School Association has just released the game schedule for football teams in Georgia. Duluth High School’s football season starts with a game at home against Berkmar High School Aug. 30. DHS is in Region 7-AAAAAA.
